New Ex Chateau Release: 2011 Chateau Latour, "Wonderful" Neal Martin

*Beats all other First Growths and Petrus & Le Pin in Neal Martin’s 10 Year On Tasting*

*Excellent notes from Martin & Anson and will be drinking superbly now*

*Perfect ex-chateau provenance*

We have a lovely new release to offer directly from the cellars of Chateau Latour today, the “Wonderful” (Neal Martin) 2011 vintage. The joint-highest-scoring red Bordeaux of the vintage in Neal Martin’s comprehensive report in 2021, this 2011 is a beautifully mature Latour that will drink superbly for years to come.

Interestingly, the 2011 vintage was the last Chateau Latour released en primeur before the chateau famously changed its policy and began holding stocks back until more mature. A portion of this 2011 was kept at the chateau, however, and now, twelve years after the harvest, it looks to be in a fascinating place in its development.

For Neal Martin, it shows the classic characteristics for which Latour is renowned. He found “There is impressive intensity here, regal and convincing” and “There is a solid backbone to this wine, plenty of freshness, quite powerful towards the finish with superb persistence”. With 95 points it outranks every other 2011 First Growth at the 2021 Ten Year On Tasting, as well as beating Petrus and Le Pin from the Right Bank.

Jane Anson is also a fan. Latour is renowned for its ability to transcend a vintage; the 2011 is a prime example and “A delicious wine that stands out from many in the vintage” and is “A stately Latour.” She gives it an excellent 97 points.

It is a superb option for those looking for a mature Latour with perfect provenance for drinking now and in the coming years. Do take a look and let me know if you would like to secure a case or two.

The 2011 Latour is well-defined on the nose with blackberry, bilberry, cedar, hoisin and a touch of mint. There is impressive intensity here, regal and convincing. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins. There is a solid backbone to this wine, plenty of freshness, quite powerful towards the finish with superb persistence. A delicious wine that stands out from many in the vintage. A ton of personality, with a sappy, raspberry, autumnal berry fruit as it opens and travels through the palate, with rose petals on the edge that give a beautiful uplift along with the classic trace of mint. Its tannins are a little more angular than you find in the 2010 and 2009, but it is starting to lengthen and open, although this was a vintage that was not immediately impressive in the way that the previous two had been. A stately Latour, one that needs another few years to really show its place. The last Latour to be sold en primeur in the old system. 34% of overall production. Harvest September 12 to 26.
