New & Exclusive Champagne Listings

It is truly exciting to be bringing you a trio of brand new Champagne listings.

You are probably familiar with the characterful wines of Famille Moussé, the first Grower Champagne to join Vinum’s portfolio.  Cedric Mousse is celebrating his family’s 100th anniversary as a Champagne producer this year and has introduced a brand new curve that we are delighted to launch today.

In addition, we have wines from two growers we are thrilled to have added to our list this year: Champagne Pertois-Moriset and Champagne Marie Demets.

Grower Champagne is often celebrated for the value it delivers over the big houses.  However, the category also deserves recognition for the diversity it brings to Champagne.  Diversity of terroir, personality, grape variety, style, and even vintage.

Back in February, Our master of wine Matthew Hemming made his first trip to Champagne since late 2019, when he first met Cedric Mousse.  During this trip, Matthew was struck by the energy and dynamism of the Grower Champagne community.  He was thrilled to discover the wines of Pertois-Moriset and Marie Demets and, together, he feels these three estates showcase three facets of this wonderfully diverse region.

Famille Moussé
Cedric is based in the village of Cuisles, in the Marne Valley.  A 12th generation winemaker, currently celebrating 100 years of family production, Cedric champions the Pinot Meunier variety and his unique terroir of green clay.  L’Esquisse is a brand new addition to his range that we are pleased to launch today.

Champagne Pertois-Moriset
Cecile and Vincent Bauchet run this domaine, which is based in the famous village of Mesnil-sur-Oger – the heart of Chardonnay country.  We were tipped off to Pertois-Moriset by a friend and, by coincidence, Vincent is close friends with Cedric Mousse!  To introduce you to the range of precise yet richly textured Champagnes we have a classic Blanc de Blanc from his vineyards.

Champagne Marie Demets
This grower is based in the far south of Champagne and is closer to Beaune that Reims in many ways!  I first tasted their wines during Burgfest in 2022 and Neal Martin later named that bottle his Sparkling Wine of 2022.  The wine is called Intransigeance and fewer than 3,000 bottles were produced!

These wines are all in our Singapore warehouse and ready for immediate delivery.  What’s more, each of these three wines is just a representative of the larger ranges we have shipped from each grower.  For vintage releases, special cuvees, magnums and more, please contact your account manager – there is so much more to explore and this is just the tip of the iceberg!

L’Esquisse Blanc de Noirs – Famille Mousse

40 cases (1×6) OC available @ $300 per case (w/ GST $324)

This is your new house Champagne!  Cedric has created L’Esquisse, which means ‘sketch’, to provide an entry point into his wines, his terroir and the world of Pinot Meunier.  Based on the 2020 vintage, with 30% from 2021, it is blended from new and younger plots of Pinot Meunier (70%) and Pinot Noir (30%).  The style is fresh and fruit-driven, for aperitif, friends and celebration.

Le Quatre Terroirs Blanc de Blanc – Champagne Pertois-Moriset

40 cases (1×6) OC available @ $360 per case (w/ GST $388.80)

Le Quatre Terroirs is a low dosage (3g/l), 100% Chardonnay, from the four classic villages of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Cramant and Chouilly.  Technically an NV, this is blended 70% 2018 and the balance from a perpetual reserve.  Very pure Chardonnay expression on the nose with citrus butter and orchard fruit.  Has a touch of nuts and creme brulee on the attack.  Buttered toast nods to characters.  Broadens to quite a rich mid-palate and the low dosage is almost entirely obscured by this volume and fruit.  There’s a tension and focus right through the core, with a sort of oyster shell minerality and a whisp of seabreeze.  Delivers beautifully for its level and the aromas continue to develop in the glass as it builds to a very clean and lingering finish.

92/100 – Matthew Hemming MW

Intransigeance 2017 – Champagne Marie Demets

35 cases (1×6) OC available @ $390 per case (w/ GST $421.20)

For the wines, we began with my “Sparkling Wine of 2022”, introduced by a pal in Beaune last October. The 2017 Extra Brut Intransigeance comes from the small family-run Champagne Marie Demets. Pierre Demets is the third generation winemaker who took over the running of the house in 2014, joined by his wife Mathilde three years later. It’s a tiny house in the middle of nowhere, apparently closer to Dijon than Reims. Their Intransigence is a blend of 56% Pinot Noir and 44% Chardonnay from two parcels in the Côte des Bar, “La Forêt” in Gyé-sur-Seine and “Fins” in Neu-ville-sur-Seine, vinified in stainless-steel vat for ten months and then 40 months sur lattes, disgorged in December 2021 with a low dosage of 1g/L. Just 2,772 bottles were made. This has a vivid bouquet with red apples, freshly-baked brioche and nectarine, the Pinot Noir more expressive than the Chardonnay. I appreciated its delineation and joie-de-vivre. The palate has real weight and race, a vibrant Champagne with a fine edgy, citrus-led opening before subtle white peach, lime and Clementine notes furnish the finish. It appeared to gain weight as we worked our way through the bottle. Prices for this are incredibly reasonable in the present inflationary climate for Champagne, so it is highly recommended.

93/100 – Neal Martin / Vinous
