We are delighted today to offer the 2022 Chardonnay and Chenin as well as the Rondekop Per Se Cabernet Sauvignon from Oldenburg Vineyards. The whites have come in fresh, lively, and full of character, while the remarkable 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon brings the reds to the fore, showcasing Oldenburg’s continued ascent in the world of fine wine.

South Africa’s wines continue to redefine value, offering some of the best quality-to-price ratios found today. With a meticulous approach to vineyard and terroir, winemaker Nic van Aarde harnesses Banghoek Valley’s ancient soils to create wines that punch well above their price point. Oldenburg’s amphitheater setting provides an ideal backdrop for Nic’s exploration of microclimates and terroir, delivering wines of finesse, complexity, and soul.

It was Oldenburg’s Chardonnay that first captivated us with its slender, racy profile, showing great texture and a signature minerality. Anthony Mueller from the Wine Advocate loved the 2022, awarded it with 94 points and declared “This is an absolutely stunning Chardonnay. Bravo!”. Meanwhile, for the same critic, the Chenin Blanc 2022 is “Pure, elegant and refined”.

For the red aficionados, we are excited to bring you the 2020 Rondekop ‘Per Se’ Cabernet Sauvignon, a rich, expressive wine that earned 95+ points from Mueller who says “I’ll be adding some of this to my cellar when it’s available, and I recommend you do too. I’ll be keeping an eye on this producer from here on out. […] Bravo!”

Pure, elegant and refined, the 2022 Chenin Blanc is fresh with ripe peach and wax melon notes. Medium-bodied, flavors of sweet citrus appear with fresh green and yellow apples before displaying a kiss of phenolic bitterness on the palate. The wine is balanced and zesty and will best perform when paired with food. Nicely done.

Fresh, creamy and expressive, the 2022 Chardonnay explodes from the glass with citrus blossom, elegant oak expressions, brown baking spices, popcorn kernel and a delightful leesy essence. Medium-bodied and with 13.5% alcohol, the palate is focused, precise and balanced, offering succulent acidity before ending with an energetic finish that has me craving more. This is an absolutely stunning Chardonnay. Bravo!

“The 2020 Rondekop Per Se offers seductive oak tones with sweet cherry essence, plum blossom and dusty, dark red fruit before bursting with elegant notions of turned earth and baked clay. Locally selling for around 700 rand and easily worth triple that price, the wine exudes layers of complexity with fine-grained tannins and possesses power with finesse. The wine concludes with a long, lingering and mineral-laced finish that has me returning for more. I’ll be adding some of this to my cellar when it’s available, and I recommend you do too. I’ll be keeping an eye on this producer from here on out. Bravo!”
