3 Superb Dominus Vintages: Outpost of famed proprietor, Christian Moueix

Nestled in the Yountville AVA within the iconic Napa Valley, Dominus Estate is more than a winery; it is a cornerstone of American viticulture with a profound heritage rooted in traditional French winemaking methods. Established by Christian Moueix of the revered Moueix family – famous for their stewardship of Pétrus in Bordeaux – Dominus Estate embodies a passion for excellence and the serene complexity of Napa terroir.

Dominus Estate’s origins trace back to the acquisition of the historic Napanook Vineyard, a site that has been integral to Napa Valley’s winemaking since 1836. The birth of Dominus Estate in the 1980s marked a transformative chapter in the valley, bringing Bordeaux’s time-honored traditions to the fertile soils of California. This transatlantic winemaking voyage was spearheaded by Jean-Pierre Moueix, whose foresight and dedication laid the groundwork for the estate’s philosophy: harmony between land and expression.

Today, we extend an invitation to discover three outstanding vintages. The 2018 and 2019vintages have been awarded perfect scores of 100 points and heralded as “a spectacular expression of the vintage and Napanook vineyard” with the accolade of being “a magic-carpet wine.” Meanwhile, critics Lisa Perrotti Brown and James Suckling were enamored with the 2020 vintage, bestowing it with 96 and 98 points respectively, and praising it as “Yum!” and “impressive.”

1 Magnum (x1.5L) @ SGD$ 760/ Mag (inc GST $828.40)

“A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Dominus has a deep garnet-purple color. It rolls out of the glass with expressive notes of baked blackberries, preserved plums, and kirsch, with suggestions of Indian spices, sandalwood, potpourri, and black truffles, plus a ferrous hint. The full-bodied palate delivers a firm, grainy texture with just enough freshness to support the generous fruit, finishing long and oh-so-spicy. Yum!”
96 Points Lisa Perrotti-Brown

“Aromas of blackcurrants, black cherries, hints of graphite, wet earth, and lavender. Sandalwood. Full-bodied with an impressive and refined structure that runs deep and vertical in the wine. Chewy. Hints of chocolate and hazelnut at the end. Needs five or six years to soften.”
98 Points James Suckling

2019 Dominus Estate Proprietary Red
21 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$  450/ bottle (inc GST $490.50)
5 Magnums (x1.5L) @ SGD$ 990/ Mag (inc GST $1,079.10)

“Composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Dominus was harvested from September 29 to October 10. It was aged in 40% new oak. Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose slowly unfurls to unveil beguiling floral notes of candied violets and rose oil over a core of crème de cassis, blackberry pie, and plum preserves, giving way to notions of licorice, Indian spices, iron ore, and crushed rocks. Full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with taut, muscular black fruit layers, intertwined with gorgeous floral and exotic spice accents, and framed by firm, finely grained tannins with seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. Tightly coiled with so much latent energy waiting to explode, this is a spectacular expression of the vintage and Napanook vineyard. Still tightly coiled, give it a good 6-7 years in the cellar before broaching, and allow it a few hours in a decanter if consumed before 2032. 3500 cases made, to be released in May 2022.”

2018 Dominus Estate Proprietary Red
9 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 475/ bottle (inc GST $517.75)

“This is incredible on the nose, offering hot stones, blackcurrants, iodine and wet earth. Full-bodied with a tight center palate, then it opens with a tannin structure that is weightless and spreads across the palate. Totally integrated on the palate. This is a magic-carpet wine. Really incredible. One of the reference points for the vintage. Drinkable now and please try a bottle, but it’s one for the cellar.”
100 Points James Suckling
