Burgundy 2023: Domaine Rossignol-Trapet

Based on the quality of what I tasted here in 2023, I’m inclined to agree with Rossignol’s take that his wines will be at a minimum very good and perhaps, as he suggests, even excellent in time
– Allen Meadows / Burghound

Brothers David and Nicolas Rossignol make wine in a style that leaves nowhere to hide.  Biodynamic farming puts them at nature’s mercy in the vineyards.  In the winery, the very delicate extraction, spontaneous fermentation by wild yeasts and only modest use of new oak result in wines that are the purest expressions of fruit, terroir and vintage the brothers can achieve.  The only embellishment is a seasoning of spice notes, from the use of whole clusters (about 50% in 2023), that serves to accent the fruit.

Wines so pared-back and unadorned with ‘technique’ can sometimes feel almost austere, especially when young, but there is no such danger with the Rossignol-Trapet 2023s – David and Nicolas have overseen a glorious range in this vintage.

Rossignol-Trapet own the fourth largest parcel of Le Chambertin, understandably this crowns the range.  However, in 2023, I do suggest you consider the excellent Latricieres Chambertin which adds superb tension and mineral complexity to its Grand Cru volume and stature.

At 1er Cru level, 2023 Clos Prieur eclipses the 2022 and competes with 2019 as the most complete version I have ever tasted at the domaine.

Allen Meadows rates the Gevrey Vieilles Vignes as ‘outstanding’.  This is a village cru that offers flattering early drinking but has a track record for impressive ageing over 10-12 years.  I was impressed by both the wealth of raspberry fruit and the wine’s texture – Chambertin may be the crown jewels but this is the signature wine and standard bearer of the estate!

It is well known that 2023 was a generous crop and, as agents, we receive a generous allocation.  However, please let us know soon if you are keen to secure your first choices from this superior range

With very best wishes,
Matthew Hemming MW

Domaine Rossignol-Trapet
2023 Beaune 1er Cru Les Teurons
SGD $480 ($523.20 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
Like all the wines across the wines, about 50% whole bunch fermentation, no pigeage and only the lightest of pressings, for a very delicate extraction.  Succulent, plummy fruit.  Lots of flesh and texture.  Surprisingly plump for this domaine’s style.  Some spice and tannin, from the stems, on the back end.
90-92pts – Matthew Hemming MW

A discreet but perceptible application of wood and menthol nuances frame the liqueur-like dark berry and spice aromas. There is both good volume and vibrancy to the caressing medium weight flavors that possess a succulent mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the stony, youthfully austere and moderately firm finish. Very good quality here.

2023 Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes
SGD $480 ($523.20 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
Pure and expressive.  Lots of raspberries and red berry fruit aromas – seriously charming.  Has an impressive level of complexity and textural richness for a village cru.  Nice energy.  Spice, from the stems, takes over on the mid-palate.  Finishes fresh and briary.
90-92 – Matthew Hemming MW

A mentholated top note can be found on the slightly riper aromas of plum, newly turned earth and a whisper of the sauvage. The sleek, delicious and vibrant middle weight flavors possess both fine vibrancy and detail while delivering solid length on the moderately austere and lightly rustic finale. This is a solid Gevrey villages and worth checking out.

2023 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur
SGD $960 ($1,046.40 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
** Limited availability **
Scented and focused, almost with a Vosne-esque profile that’s mineral and tensile.  Lots of finesse and detail.  There’s a Gevrey sense of iron and muscle but all within an elegant and supple, pretty, package.  Some floral characters, and peonies, on the finish.  Probably the best Clos Prieur I’ve ever tasted at Rossignol-Trapet.
92-95pts – Matthew Hemming MW

A background touch of menthol is present on the cool and airy aromas of black and red cherry, forest floor and less prominent sauvage nuances. The succulent, refined and intensely mineral-driven medium weight flavors possess a sleek mouthfeel while exhibiting excellent depth and persistence on the powerful finale. This is firm, balanced and built-to-age – one to consider.
91-94pts – sweet spot, outstanding – Allen Meadows

2023 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle
SGD $960 ($1,046.40 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
** Limited availability **
Very plush and generously-fruited, with strawberries and cherries.  Open and expressive – surprisingly opulent – but then spice and acidity comes to the fore on the mid-palate.  Whilst Clos Prieur is all about precision and tension, this is a much more demonstrative expression of richness and generosity.
91-93pts – Matthew Hemming MW

Along with the Latricières, this possesses the most elegant aromatic profile in the range with is exuberantly spicy and floral-suffused nose of red and dark pinot fruit, violet, rose petal and wet stone. The mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is a blend of power and refinement while displaying even more minerality on the balanced, long, firm and youthfully austere finale. This is also one to strongly consider.

2023 Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru
SGD $1,680 ($1,831.20 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
** Maximum 1 case per customer **
Bold, ripe aromatics that are spicy, rich and musky with a touch of new leather.  Red and dark cherries, orange skin and more exotic fruits.  This is open-hearted and appealing.  Richly-textured.  Lots of weight and density right through to the finish.
91-93pts – Matthew Hemming MW

Moderate reduction overshadows the fruit but there is both good freshness and verve to the velvet-textured and generously proportioned flavors that are rich to the point of opulence before culminating in a youthfully austere dusty and impressively long finish that offers even better complexity. This is already showing well and is a wine that should reward mid to even longer-term cellaring.
92-95pts – Allen Meadows

2023 Latricieres Chambertin Grand Cru
SGD $1,800 ($1,962 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
** Limited availability **
Combines Grand Cru volume with a superb sense of focus, length and tension.  A distincly mineral expression, with lots of spice that starts to crackle and pop on the mid-palate.  Has a sense of dynamism to the complexity.  Scented, taut and very long.  For me, this is the best wine in the cellar in 2023.
93-96pts – Matthew Hemming MW

A strikingly elegant if restrained nose is comprised by notes of red and dark currant, forest floor, exotic tea and an abundance of floral hints. There is both fine intensity and an almost aggressive minerality to the chiseled medium-bodied flavors that possess an appealing texture before concluding in a moderately austere and refreshing finish that also displays just a touch of warmth. This is a very classy wine that should also amply repay mid to longer-term keeping.
92-95pts – Allen Meadows

2023 Chambertin Grand Cru
SGD $2,700 ($2,943 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
** Limited availability **
A full 20 barrels in 2023, although only seven in 2024.  Earthy and aristoctratic – at first on the nose but then with a similar scale and profile on the palate.  The tannins are punchy but finely woven.  Lifted, fragrant and surprisingly elegant for such a big wine.  Dry and mineral on the finish.
93-95pts – Matthew Hemming MW

This is similarly restrained with a cool, airy and almost as elegant nose of red and dark wild currant and pungent humus-tinged earth, spice and floral aromas. There is almost as much minerality to the slightly bigger-bodied though still super-sleek flavors that terminate in a compact, moderately austere and wonderfully persistent finale. This is backward and in need of developing better depth but that should almost certainly occur if given a chance.
93-95pts – Allen Meadows
