M. Chapoutier: a winery unlike any other! Amazing scores and wines!

A couple of weeks ago, some of you had the pleasure of attending our M. Chapoutier dinner with Edouard Payot, Export Director, at Imperial Treasure. Due to the success of the evening, we are now offering some more M. Chapoutier wines directly from the domaine!

If we would have to summarize Domaine Michel Chapoutier in three points, here is what we would highlight:

  1. Founded in 1808, it is an old family business.
  2. It was the first winery to use biodynamic principles in the Rhone Valley (1991).
  3. It is the only domaine that uses Braille labels, which is a tribute to blind people and ensures that everyone can enjoy M. Chapoutier wines.

To continue with key points, the special selection of the day includes:

  1. Only highly-rated wines!
  2. Only single vineyards: even the Chateauneuf-du-Pape Barbe Rac is a testimony to a mono-expression of a particular plot.
  3. Only single variety wines, including Marsanne for the whites, Grenache for the Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and Syrah for the Saint Joseph, Côte Rôtie, and the iconic Pavillon.

Finally, if you are curious, please take a look at our Instagram where you will find the latest interviews with Edouard Payot. In one of them, Edouard gives his top 3 recommendations for food pairing with the M. Chapoutier 100% Marsanne whites:

  1. Szechuan cuisine
  2. Curries
  3. A special recommendation from Michel Chapoutier himself: with century eggs – Pi Dan!

2006 M. Chapoutier Ermitage le Méal Blanc
30 bottles @ SGD $270 per bottle (inc GST $291.60)
Just as good as the de l’Orée, but in a very different style, the medium gold-hued 2006 Ermitage Le Méal Blanc has a complex, layered perfume of honeysuckle, orange blossom, celery seed, caramelized stone fruits, and acacia flowers. Just about pure perfection on the palate, it’s full-bodied, deep, and incredibly concentrated, with a stacked mid-palate, an unctuous, opulent texture, and a gorgeous finish. This is another magical Hermitage Blanc from the genius of Michel Chapoutier. Don’t miss it.

2009 M. Chapoutier Ermitage le Méal Blanc
36 bottles @ SGD $260 per bottle (inc GST $280.80)
From a warm site and a hot vintage, the 2009 Ermitage le Meal Blanc was harvested on the August 28, and aged in 100% new French oak. Flirting with perfection and a full-bore, exotic, almost over-the-top expression of Marsanne, it has less minerality than the 2010, yet more of everything else with boatloads of caramelized fruits, buttered citrus, white flowers, honey and crushed rocks all soaring from the glass. Rich, layered, exuberant, unctuous and exotic, with stunning freshness despite it’s thickness and weight, drink this incredible white anytime over the coming 30-40 years.

2006 M. Chapoutier Ermitage De L’Orée
42 bottles @ SGD $270 per bottle (inc GST $291.60)

Much more focused and tight than the Le Méal, the full-bodied 2006 Ermitage De L’Oree offers an incredible array of caramelized stone fruits, brioche, honeysuckle, and orange blossom, with a liqueur of rocks-like minerality on the finish. This pure, precise, chiseled monster of a wine will evolve for another 20 years or more.

2013 M. Chapoutier Ermitage de l’Orée
60 bottles @ SGD $300 per bottle (inc GST $324)

Leading off three single-vintage whites from Hermitage, the stunning 2013 Ermitage Cuvee de L’Orée has an off-the-hook bouquet that includes just about everything you could think of when considering Hermitage Blanc. White peach, white flowers, almond paste, quince and wet rock are just some of the nuances, and it packs a serious punch on the palate, with full-bodied richness, a flamboyant, expansive texture and riveting focus and purity. Give it a year or so and drink it over the following 2-3 decades.

2016 M. Chapoutier Chateauneuf-du-Pape Barbe Rac
12 bottles @ SGD $140 per bottle (inc GST $151.20)

The sensational 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Barbe Rac comes from a sandy clay terroir located in the western portion of the appellation. A massive, deep, full-bodied wine, with a huge nose of blueberry liqueur, crushed rock, violets, and garrigue, it has no hard edges, a thick, unctuous texture, sweet tannin, and a finish that just won’t quit. It’s the greatest vintage of this wine ever made (surpassing the 2007) and will be a candidate for perfection in a few years and keep for 15-20 years.

2016 M. Chapoutier Côte Rôtie Neve
9 bottles @ SGD $180 per bottle (inc GST $194.40

Named after the lieu-dit, which is located next to Viallière, the 2016 Côte Rôtie Nève sports a deep purple/ruby-tinged color as well as an exotic bouquet of cassis, blueberries, crushed rocks, graphite, and violets. Very young, vibrant, and unevolved, yet with terrific density and purity, it’s a fabulously textured, balanced wine that’s going to benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and cruise for 15+ years.

2016 M. Chapoutier Saint-Joseph Le Clos
6 bottles @ SGD $180 per bottle (inc GST $194.40)
Crème de cassis, graphite, gunpowder, lavender, and obvious crushed rock notes all emerge from the 2016 Saint Joseph Le Clos, which is the unquestionably one of the finest wines in the appellation. Coming from a higher elevation, east-facing block, brought up in 30% new barrels, it offers a Hermitage-like stature and level of structure, bright acidity, and a big finish. Young, backward, and in need of 5-7 years of bottle age, it’s going to keep for 2+ decades.

2015 M. Chapoutier Saint-Joseph Le Clos
48 bottles @ SGD $165 per bottle (inc GST $178.20)
“Screaming “Granite!” at the top of its lungs, the 2015 Saint Joseph Le Clos comes from an east-facing parcel located high up on the west side of the Rhône River. Inky colored and packed with notions of blackberries, cassis, crushed rocks, graphite and violets, it’s full-bodied, perfectly balanced, elegant and seamless. With an iron fist in a velvet glove-like character, this heavenly 2015 might just be the best wine ever to come from this appellation. There’s not much of it, but don’t miss a chance to try this wine!

2006 M. Chapoutier Ermitage le Pavillon
6 bottles @ SGD $315 per bottle (inc GST $340.20)

*Available in 6-8 weeks in our SG cellars*
Showing more minerality than the le Meal, yet more plushness and sexiness than the l’Ermite, the 2006 Ermitage le Pavillon is a tour de force that gives up sensational notes of crushed rocks, blackberries, currants, smoked meats and licorice. It shows a touch of iron and bloodiness with time in the glass, is full-bodied, seamless and incredibly layered on the palate. There’s no shortage of tannin either and this beauty needs 4-5 years of cellaring to hit full maturity, and will keep for another 2-3 decades.

2007 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon
24 bottles @ SGD $270 per bottle (inc GST $291.60)
The 2007 Hermitage Pavillon is drinking brilliantly today. Classic cassis, bacon fat, and graphite, as well as a beautiful minerality, all emerge from this concentrated Hermitage that has silky tannins, full body, awesome purity of fruit, and a great, great finish. While it doesn’t have the sheer density of the 2005, 2009, or 2010, it’s perfectly balanced and is simply a thrilling Hermitage to enjoy over the coming 15 years or more.
