2019 Peter Michael Winery: Two "Elite" & "Off the charts" Cuvees

Last week, the Vinum Team had the absolute pleasure to host Paul Michael, Sir Peter Michael son, the owner of Peter Micheal Winery. They spent two hours tasting the wines and learning more about this fascinating Sonoma County Estate that was founded in 1982. The team loved the wines and these come highly recommended by us!!

Today we are thrilled to offer two special cuvees, Les Pavots and Au Paradis from the “WOW” 2019 vintage (LPB).
Les Pavots 2019
Among the original Knights Valley plantings dating back to 1989, Les Parvots is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sémillon. Located at 900-1400 feet, this is a warmer site with southern exposure. It is generally composed of rocky volcanic origin Rhyolite-based soils. Labels coming from here include the Les Pavots and L’Esprit des Pavots red wines as well as L’Apres Midi, which is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (1/3 is Musque clone) and a little Sémillon.
Jeb Dunnuck scored it 98 points and stated “These classic, traditionally made wines certainly have an old world feel/style, yet never lose their California soul…the cuvees show singular characters and the quality is off the charts.”
Au Paradis 2019
Au Paradis vineyard is composed of the red, rocky, volcanic soils common to parts of Pritchard Hill, which makes sense since it is in Oakville foothills, below Continuum and above Dalla Valle. Planted in 1984 and 2007, the varieties here are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.
Antonio Galloni loved Au Paradis, gave 97 points and stated “The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis is elite. Bright and aromatic, with terrific delineation […]”

“The 2019 Les Pavots is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, and the remainder Petit Verdot. It has unfolding layers of dark minerals, with graphite, boysenberry liqueur, and fresh leather. The palate is expressive of its mountain fruit, with more gripping structure but no harsh edges. This is a remarkable wine to hold a few years and enjoy over the following two decades.”

“The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis is elite. Bright and aromatic, with terrific delineation, the 2019 is a fabulous yet embryonic wine that just needs time to flesh out. The energy and drive here are remarkable, as is the expression of this vineyard in the Eastern Hills of Oakville. Dark red/purplish fruit, spice, lavender, sage, mint and rose petal lend quite a bit of nuance. In a vintage in which so many wines are all about immediacy and overtness, Au Paradis is a wine for the future.”
