Thibault Liger-Belair's pioneering Moulin-a-Vent crus

Thibault Liger-Belair was amongst the original pioneers to look south, from the gentle slopes of the Cote d’Or, and fall under the spell of the dramatic granite hillsides of the Beaujolais and their old Gamay vines.

Gnarled vines –  grown on the poor soils of vertiginous slopes – were often abandoned by their owners as uneconomic for the production of high volume, low quality wines.  Using techniques honed crafting his 1er Cru Les St Georges and Richebourg, Thibault began to unlock the potential of his Moulin-a-Vent terroirs and open a new frontier for fans of his Cote de Nuits wines.

2020 is a finely balanced vintage of ripe, succulent fruit and incisive acids.  Made entirely in larger casks of old oak, Thibault’s emphasis is squarely on expressing fruit purity and vineyard signatures without the influence of wood flavours.  Old vines provide elevated intensity and the sensitive use of whole bunch fermentation brings additional spice and complexity.

This is a fine range of site-specific Moulin-a-Vent in a high quality vintage.  At 4 years old, each wine is approachable now and will be equally at home with artisan cheese, your favourite chicken rice or simply served on its own.  Equally, you could confidently stash these away in the cellar for a decade or more.

Cru Beaujolais is one of my favourite wines, both for casual drinking and for ageing in my family cellar – I just wish we had the agency for Thibault’s wines in the UK!

Do let us know if you would like a case or two for your own collection.

With best wishes,
Matthew Hemming MW

40% whole bunches bring animation and spice to the nose, which bursts from the glass.  There’s an initial funkiness but this quickly blows off with air.  Very polished, cocoa-scented and dusty with tannins – but not dusty in terms of dry or earthy – the tannins are finely powdered like a dusting.  Bright and vivid berry fruit.  Superb weight and layers.

89/100 Allen Meadows / Burghound
There is a whiff of animale present on the notably ripe and expressive red and black cherry aromas that are cut with spice and earth hints. The medium weight flavors are rich to the point of being plush yet with no lack of punch and power that carries over to the firm, indeed almost meaty, finale that displays good length. While the nose may not be for everyone, I like the balance as well as the development potential.

2020 Moulin-a-Vent Les Perrelles
SGD $330 ($359.70 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC) – 15 cases available
90-93pts Matthew Hemming MW
From a more sheltered and southerly site than the Vieilles Vignes.  This is more herbal and sage-scented – almost garrigue -although the warm site complements this with juicy black fruit.  Complex and spicy.  Deeper soil and hence less mineral and more about density and body.  Almost creamy in textyre  Has more bass and less precision but finishes full and satisfying.

2020 Moulin-a-Vent La Roche
SGD $360 ($392.40 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC) – 15 cases available
93-95pts Matthew Hemming MW
From the highest and most exposed site, right on the top of the hill by the windmill.  The windy exposition is both cooling – promoting a markedly mineral style – and limits the yield, boosting intensity.  Stark, mineral and chalky in profile with very crisp red berry fruit.  The acidity gives great precision and tension.  Salne, crisp and linear.  The finish has an energy that cracks like a whip.

91-94pts & 5-stars Jasper Morris MW / Inside Burgundy
Incredibly intense black purple. A blockbuster, but in a good way. This is superb on the palate with a wonderful future. The bouquet is not yet ready to show. This has a finely balanced deep red fruit with some plums, maybe a little grenadine, otherwise more classic dark red berries. The 2020 La Roche has an excellent grain to the tannin, correct acidity and very long.
