Something of a legend amongst Napa Valley insiders, Tor Kenward once gifted his close friend Robert Parker a bottle of an as-yet-unknown Cabernet: Screaming Eagle 1992.  Parker wrote that this new winery was set “to create quite a stir”!  The rest, as they say, is history.

Tor Kenward is that kind of guy.

During 27 years at Beringer Tor built the admirable reputation of the Reserve and Single Vineyard bottlings of Cabernet and Chardonnay.  During that time he obsessively explored the terroirs of Napa, getting under the skin of the Valley and becoming part of the fabric of California wine culture with a unique insider’s view.  Tor’s mentors were a roll call of icons: Andre Tchelitscheff, Robert Mondavi, Warren Winiarski, Ed Sbragia and Maynard Amerine.  To give you a flavour, if you are not familiar with the names, Tchelitscheff made the legendary Bealieu Vineyards wines of the 1960s and later advised Warren Winiarski in the early days of Stags Leap Wine Cellars prior to Winiarski producing the 1973 SLV Cabernet that triumphed at The Judgement of Paris.

Whilst at Beringer, Tor travelled extensively in Europe’s most prestigious vineyards – walking the vines, tasting the wines and discussing production philosophies with the producers.

Upon retiring in 2001 Tor and his wife founded TOR Kenward Family Wines.

Our plan was simple. Our wines would come from only the best blocks in great vineyard sites I knew and revered. All our wines are hand-made in every sense and in very small quantities.

A Vinum team attending a Napa Cabernet symposium in New York City discovered TOR wines earlier this year.  Today we are thrilled to introduce them as an exclusive Vinum agency in Singapore and launch the highly-rated 2019 vintage.

“How have you only ‘just discovered’ a winery of such prestige and a 20 year pedigree?” is a legitimate question.  The answer is simple: this is a genuinely small production operation and a full 75-80% of each release disappears straight into the cellars of US mailing list customers.

Wines expressing the rich generosity of Napa yet with a light hand that allows for balance and puts the vineyard signature front and centre, we were immediately drawn to the TOR house style.  Made with a hands-off philosophy, fermented by wild yeasts, neither concentrated nor acidified, and bottled unfined and unfiltered, TOR aspires to the essence of premium artisanal Napa winemaking.

Tierra Roja Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

“Tor’s 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tierra Roja Vineyard—from an Oakville site on the eastern edge of the valley, just below Dalla Valle—delivers charming notes of cherries, redcurrants and cassis. It’s full-bodied, supple, silky and long on the finish, with a touch of mocha, gentle herbal shadings and an overall sense of elegance.”

Chasing Windmills Syrah/Grenache 2019

96 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 120 per bottle (inc GST $129.60)

A new wine, the 2019 Chasing Windmills Fulldraw Vineyard was made and bottled in Paso Robles. A blend of 59% Syrah and 41% Grenache, aged in 20% new French oak (mainly puncheons), it offers up scents of asphalt, crushed stone, black olives, ripe cherries and espresso. Full-bodied and not particularly tannic, it’s supple across the palate, then tart and mouthwatering on the finish.
