Breathtaking Ruchottes Chambertin Vertical! 2001 - 2020 Domaine Armand Rousseau

“J’aime le Pinot, c’est la faute à Rousseau.” or in English “Loving Pinot? Blame Rousseau.” is a playful echo of Victor Hugo’s “Les Misérables.” In the book, Gavroche humorously blames Rousseau for his troubles just as wine lovers might jestingly ‘blame’ Domaine Armand Rousseau for their preference for their wonderful Pinots!

We are thrilled today to offer a lovely vertical of Domaine Rousseau Ruchottes Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru that spans from 2001 to 2020! Ruchottes Chambertin is one of the smallest and most distinctive Grand Crus in Gevrey-Chambertin, and Domaine Rousseau owns the entire 1.06 hectares of the Clos des Ruchottes, making it a monopole.

The vertical includes only vintages which have received fantastic scores from Allen Meadows and Neal Martin, who praised it: “a really lovely effort…beautifully well-balanced…outstanding delineation and intensity…seriously good high quality juice…Is this the finest Ruchottes-Chambertin in 2016? Without a shadow of a doubt.”

If you are looking for a sublime and rare wine from one of the best vintages and producers in Burgundy, you should not miss this chance! These are offered in lovely condition as you can see below. Please let us know if you would like to add a case or two to your cellar.

2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau, Ruchottes Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru
1 case (x12) @ SGD$ 28,500/ case (inc GST $31,065)
“The expressive nose displays plenty of secondary character though only a whisper of sous-bois to the spicy and vaguely sauvage nose of mostly dried red berries and warm earth. The delicious, supple and lightly mineral-tinged middle weight flavors offer excellent depth and persistence on the balanced finale that is almost delicate. While I describe the finish as ‘almost delicate’, this does not mean that the ’01 Clos des Ruchottes is becoming fragile so much as it is an accurate reflection of its vintage. In sum, this is a really lovely effort that is drinking as well now as it ever will while possessing the balance to continue to hold for another decade plus.”

2009 Domaine Armand Rousseau, Ruchottes Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru
1 bottle (x75cl) @ SGD$ 1,620/ bottle (inc GST $1,765.80)
“Ripe and very floral aromas display pure red pinot fruit that is cut with minerality and crushed herbs that introduce earthy and stony middle weight flavors that possess a taut muscularity and excellent power on the beautifully well-balanced and lingering finish. This is a very fresh wine of harmony that should age for decades if well-stored and while it’s not quite at the same level as the brilliant 2005 version, it’s close.”

2010 Domaine Armand Rousseau, Ruchottes Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru
3 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 1,710/ bottle (inc GST $1,863.90)
“A broad ranging nose displays notes of very ripe blue berry, floral, cassis, plum and pungent wet stone notes. The ultra-refined, pure and silky medium-bodied flavors possess outstanding delineation and this positively floats across the palate. Despite the beguiling mid-palate, this tightens up considerably on the balanced, powerful and tautly muscular finish that explodes with mouth tannin-buffering sap. This is firmly structured for the long haul and it will need plenty of cellar time before it’s completely ready.”

2012 Domaine Armand Rousseau, Ruchottes Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru
1 case (x6) @ SGD$ 10,500/ case (inc GST $11,445)
“This is beautifully elegant with its airy and cool yet markedly ripe nose of lavender, black raspberry, truffle and spiced plum scents. The sleek, well-delineated, intense and mineral-driven medium weight plus flavors possess fine mid-palate concentration before terminating in an attractively vibrant, harmonious and strikingly persistent finale. Lovely stuff that should age brilliantly well.”

2013 Domaine Armand Rousseau, Ruchottes Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru
2 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 1,350/ bottle (inc GST $1,471.50)
“A discreet touch of wood frames mildly reduced aromas such that I would strongly advise decanting this if you’re going to sacrifice a bottle in the interest of “science”. There is outstanding delineation and intensity to the refined and pure medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by deceptively pliant tannins on the saline-inflected finish that seems to be constructed from liquid stone, all wrapped in a wonderfully long and pure finish. The reduction aside this is really a lovely effort though note well that ample patience is requisite.”

2014 Domaine Armand Rousseau, Ruchottes Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru
7 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 1,440/ bottle (inc GST $1,569.60)
“An interesting note of wild strawberries adds interest to the more typical aromas of raspberry, spice, earth and distinct floral nuances. The superbly intense, powerful, focused and wonderfully chiseled mineral-driven flavors deliver a palate staining, austere and brooding but seamlessly well-balanced finish where a hint of wood appears. This is at once refined and restrained though it’s quite clear that this will, as is usually the case, require moderately extended cellaring.”

2015 Domaine Armand Rousseau, Ruchottes Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru
3 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 1,900/ bottle (inc GST $2,071)
“A moderately high-toned nose combines notes of dark cherry, plum, lavender, earth and a lovely array of spice elements. The sleek and intense middle weight plus flavors possess terrific delineation as well as evident minerality before concluding in a racy finish that is even more powerful than usual. This is impressive and the mouthfeel is one of class and grace thanks to the notably fine-grained tannins shaping the finish. This is seriously good high quality juice that is definitely bigger and more full-bodied than usual but even so it is perhaps less marked by the elevated ripeness level of the 2015 vintage despite the presence of a subtle hint of backend warmth.”

2016 Domaine Armand Rousseau, Ruchottes Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru
4 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 1,710/ bottle (inc GST $1,863.90)
“The 2016 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru, which Cyrille described as her “heart wine,” has a superb bouquet with ebullient dark cherries, bergamot, blackberry and briary, wonderful delineation and demonstrating more exuberance than Mugneret-Gibourg (which as affected by frost, whereas Rousseau was not). The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, shimmering red fruit, outstanding mineralité and a subtle crescendo toward the pixilated finish. Is this the finest Ruchottes-Chambertin in 2016? Without a shadow of a doubt.”

2017 Domaine Armand Rousseau, Ruchottes Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru
5 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 1,440/ bottle (inc GST $1,569.60)
“The 2017 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru has a pixelated bouquet that really expresses the limestone soils of this vineyard: subtle pressed iris scents infuse the red berry fruit, all with brilliant delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is a fine bead of acidity here, again, a little spicy (the leitmotif throughout the Rousseau range) with impressive grip and persistence on the finish. Excellent.”

2019 Domaine Armand Rousseau, Ruchottes Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru
4 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 1,900/ bottle (inc GST $2,071)
“The 2019 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru has a thrilling bouquet struck through with mineral-rich red berry fruit that teasingly takes time to unfurl in the glass; you can sense the limestone, and hints of graphite emerge later. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, quite piquant in style, leading to an edgy, slightly chalky finish that bristles with energy. This has great potential as a poised Ruchottes.”

2020 Domaine Armand Rousseau, Ruchottes Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru
8 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 1,850/ bottle (inc GST $2,016.50)
“The 2020 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru has a beautifully defined bouquet, very floral, exquisite focus and control with a surfeit of mineralité. Real intensity and grace. The palate is wonderfully balanced with supple tannins, fine acidity, impressive density with a voluminous black cherry and wild strawberry finish with just a tang of brine on the aftertaste. Perhaps the finest Ruchottes in ’20.”
