Micro-production, artisanal Champagne: Marie Demets & Pertois-Moriset

Towards the end of 2023 we introduced two new Grower Champagnes to our list, to sit aside the wonderful wines of Moussé et Fils.  An offer featuring the non vintage wines of all three producers marked the Sinagpore launch of Marie Demets and Pertois-Moriset.

Champagne Marie Demets is a 3rd generation family estate located in the Cote de Bars.  Today, Pierre and his wife Mathilde farm about 10-hectares and produce tiny quantities of characterful, terroir-driven wines.  Their limestone and clay soils bear similarities to those of Burgundy – they have the same Kimmeridgian marl found in Chablis – and the landscape looks and feels very Burgundian.  On the margins of the Champagne region, geographically, Marie Demets is actually slightly closer to Beaune than they are to Reims!

Champagne Pertois-Moriset is also a 3rd generation family producer.  Cecile, granddaughter of the founders, runs the house along with her husband Vincent – coincidentally a close friend of our first Grower Champagne producer, Cedric Moussé!  They are based in the heart of the Côtes de Blanc, in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, and produce classic, stylish Champagnes.

Of course, our initial shipments from these growers included more than just their entry level wines.  So, having introduced you to their NV offerings pre-Christmas, today we are delighted to delve deeper into their single vineyard and vintage wines.  With genuinely tiny production – sometimes as little as a few thousand bottles – please be quick if you are keen to secure your first choices.

Very best wishes,
Matthew Hemming MW

Champagne Marie Demets
Singularite (2019)
15 cases (1×6) OC available @ $300 per case (w/ GST $327)
A true rarity, this is a Champagne made from 100% Pinot Blanc and only 1,983 bottles were produced.  Technically a non-vintage, because its maturation time was too short to qualify for the Vintage category, this is nevertheless 100% made from the 2019 harvest.  It is from a single vineyard, planted by Mathilde’s family in 1992, and was inherited by her and Vincent for Marie Demets in 2018.

Open, flattering and generous in the glass, the aromas are dominated by delicate stone fruit characters.  It has a very low dosage (1.5g/l) and it is fascinating how this brings no austerity in the combination of Pinot Blanc and vintage.  Pure, full of finesse and really pretty, this is all about fruit rather than bready / yeasty notes and makes for an ideal aperitif or reception Champagne.  Great value and strikingly unusual.

La Foret Blanc de Blancs 2017
10 cases (1×6) OC available @ $570 per case (w/ GST $621.30)
** Limited to one case per order **
There are typically fewer than 1,500 bottles of La Foret produced each year.  A single vineyard wine, from Kimmeridgian soils on a hilltop site with a southern orientation, this is 100% Chardonnay matured in 500L oak demi-muids.

The aromas are expressive with orchard fruit and a floral, blossom-scented quality.  Betraying its Kimmeridgian terroir, and kinship with Chablis, it is shot through with a racy, vigorous and chalky acidity.  The oak influence broadens the texture, brings complexity and spice, and moderates the low 2.5g/l of dosage.  The mousse is creamy and seductive.  Long, fresh and saline on the finish.

Champagne Pertois Moriset
Rosé Blanc Grand Cru
15 cases (1×6) OC available @ $390 per case (w/ GST $425.10)
Whilst a pink Champagne, this is actually 92% Grand Cru Chardonnay from the Côte de Blancs, cut with 8% Pinot Noir from Grand Cru vineyards in Bouzy.  70% of the blend is from the current vintage, with the balance being drawn from a perpetual reserve of maturing wines (a bit like a solera).

Just 8% red wine gives a pale and delicate rosé, yet it is intensely scented with summer pudding fruits and red berries.  The bubbles are lively and persistent.  There is some depth and complexity, suggesting the influence of older wines from the perpetual reserve.  Surprisingly vinous and dry on the palate – that small proportion of red wine really feels as though it’s asserting itself!  Malolactic fermentation is blocked, so this has a bright and invigorating line of acidity which helps balance the wine as it broadens on the mid-palate.  Very serious and food-oriented Rosé.

Les Hauts d’Aillerands Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru 2015
10 cases (1×6) OC available @ $750 per case (w/ GST $817.50)
** Limited to one case per order **

100% Chardonnay from two plots in the lieu dit of Les Hauts d’Aillerands au Midi, with a total area of just 1.1-hectare.  From the 2017 vintage, and vinified in a combination of oak barrels and larger foudres, fewer than 1,200 bottles were made, with zero dosage.

I find this really special.  The aromas – all citrus and apples – suggest something tight, zippy and bright but the palate introduces bass notes and richness, presumably from the oak, that fill out the palate.  The mousse introduces pin-point precision yet you’d never guess zero dosage as there’s so much underlying density and muscle.  The finish ss superb and really persists.  With air, more buttery fruit notes start to come through.  This is great wine!
