In a recent report by Galloni, he makes it clear that 2021 was very special for Ornellaia’s home, Bolgheri. He notes, “Readers will want to pay special attention to new releases from Tuscany’s 2021 vintage” because the wines have “stunning beauty, finesse and exceptional balance”. Ornellaia is among the best and “captures all the magic of this sensational vintage on the Tuscan Coast”.
A blend of the Bordeaux varietals, Ornellaia has long been one of Italy’s superstar wines. In recent years, however, it seems to have moved up a gear in finesse, elegance and completeness. The result is a beautifully balanced classic and perhaps the finest vintage to wear this famous label.

“The 2021 Ornellaia captures all the magic of this sensational vintage on the Tuscan Coast. Rich, ample and expansive, with tremendous polish, the 2021 is pure class. Dark-toned fruit, mocha, espresso, licorice, plum and dried herbs abound. The tannins are present but also beautifully integrated, as is the French oak. There was a time not too long ago when young wines here needed years in bottle to drink well. That’s not at all the case with the 2021. The blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot works so well. New oak was 70%.”

“Aromas of blackcurrants, iodine, crushed stone, hints of mint and sage. Blue fruits. Full-bodied with chewy tannins that open with air. It’s racy and very long. Very tannin driven and energetic with power and focus. Muscular and very toned. This is the best Ornellaia for the cellar in years. Try after 2030.”

“The 2021 Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia packs a huge punch. Masses of dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, leather, licorice and cloves saturate the palate. I don’t remember a Serre Nuove with this much sheer power and somber intensity, but the balance is there, especially with aeration. It will be interesting to see how the 2021 develops. Today it is quite the powerhouse.”

“A firm and linear red with currant, berry, chocolate and cedar character. It’s medium- to full-bodied. Fine tannins that run the length of the wine. It’s tight and focused. Energetic and bright. 50% merlot and 28% cabernet sauvignon and the rest split equally between petit verdot and cabernet franc. Better after 2026.”
