We have just received our latest shipment from Oldenburg Vineyards and the 2022 whites are perhaps the best to date from this brilliant boutique estate. Bursting with vivacity and personality, we could hardly wait until after Chinese New Year to share these in their first flush of youth and as fresh as daisies.
South Africa continues to deliver some of the greatest quality-to-price ratio bottles in the fine wine world. As the industry comes of age, a greater understanding of terroir and climate is driving quality so far ahead of prices that this is truly a paradise for price-conscious wine lovers. At Oldenburg, winemaker Nic van Aarde’s patient, considered and curious approach is unlocking an ever deeper understanding of their 600 million year old soils and unique amphitheatre location in the Banghoek Valley.
Slender, racy Chardonnay with great texture and a savoury minerality was the wine that first drew me to the Oldenburg range. Chenin Blanc was more of a wild card at first. A variety the Cape has made its own, Oldenburg’s bottling comes from relatively old vines and holds great balance and intensity. With Chenin’s naturally high acidity and delightful punch of grassy, citrus flavours, I’m hard-pressed to think of better everyday drinking in the tropics.

Oldenburg Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2022

From old vine Chenin vines. Nose has some herbal and grassy tones. Acid integration is really interesting as it’s razor-sharp but but at all austere. So lively, it’s bright as a button. Has some lovely, sweet, stone fruit characters on the back palate. Saline through the finish, showing a real terroir character, and holding plenty of energy. Lemon zest, blossom and oyster shell on the back end.

Pure, elegant and refined, the 2022 Chenin Blanc is fresh with ripe peach and wax melon notes. Medium-bodied, flavors of sweet citrus appear with fresh green and yellow apples before displaying a kiss of phenolic bitterness on the palate. The wine is balanced and zesty and will best perform when paired with food. Nicely done.

Very fragrant with white melon, blossom and citrus zest. Racy, pure and vibrant on the palate. Very clean and pristine with some leesy texture giving body to the mid-palate. Nice orchard fruit comes through with time. Very fine boned and slender.

Fresh, creamy and expressive, the 2022 Chardonnay explodes from the glass with citrus blossom, elegant oak expressions, brown baking spices, popcorn kernel and a delightful leesy essence. Medium-bodied and with 13.5% alcohol, the palate is focused, precise and balanced, offering succulent acidity before ending with an energetic finish that has me craving more. This is an absolutely stunning Chardonnay. Bravo!
