New releases from Elio Grasso: Barolo 2020 & the 100/100 Runcot 2016

Gianluca Grasso excelled in 2020 with wines that capture the very best the vintage had to offer
– Antonio Galloni / Vinous

We are thrilled to be the exclusive distributors of Elio Grasso in Singapore and could not be happier to launch our offers of Barolo 2020 with the wines of this benchmark estate.

From a commanding hillside position over-looking the Gavarini vineyard, Gianluca Grasso makes three single vineyard wines, all located within the Monforte district.  There are a pair of traditionally made Barolos, one each from the Gavarini and Ginestra vineyards.  Both are actually within the MGA or Cru of Ginestra, but Gavarini has a distinctly different soil type and personality.

  • Ginestra Casa Mate is from a site with more clay in the soil and this produces a fuller, more muscular style of Barolo.
  • Gavarini Chiniera is from a sandy vineyard, giving distinctly silky tannins and a fine, elegant texture.
Grasso’s Barolo Riserva is called Runcot and this comes from a specific sub-plot within the Gavarini vineyard, on the slopes below the winery.  This is the only wine to be aged in French barriques, rather than being made in a more classical style, but such is the density and concentration of fruit that it swallows the wood almost immediately.  This year’s release is from the outstanding 2016 vintage, in which Galloni has rated Runcot a perfect 100/100.
The 2016 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is quite possibly the single greatest wine I have tasted in more than twenty years I have been coming here
– Antonio Galloni
Gianluca Grasso knocked it out of the park in 2020 and these wines were amongst the highlights of our tastings.

Very best wishes,

Quite bold, in a Monforte style, but also very pure and precise.  Deep red cherry fruit with spice and menthol.  Tannins are beautifully fine, around the sides of the mouth.  The finesse and delicacy are very impressive, sat in relief against the richness of the fruit.  Finishes with red berries and something floral.  The mid-palate has energy that would be easily missed.
95/100 – Matthew Hemming MW

The 2020 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is a heady, almost exotic wine. Harvest took place on October 17, very late for the year. Hard candy, kirsch, menthol, dried rose petal, mint and blood orange infuse the 2020 with striking depth. The tannins, often incisive here, are remarkably polished. A wine of beautiful nuance and persistence, the 2020 Gavarini is not the most obvious wine in this range, but it could very well be the classiest. Don’t miss it!
97/100 – Antonio Galloni

As usual, this is a bit more powerful and muscular than the Chiniera.  Much more dense and bold in its tannin.  it is a bass-driven style, rich with earth and liquorice tones.  Not as aerial but has much more heft and body.  The tannins are firm and chalky.  Finishes dry and savoury.  Really broadens out on the very back end.
93+/100 – Matthew Hemming MW

The 2020 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is gorgeous. Aromatically captivating and nuanced, the 2020 impresses right out of the gate. All the classic Ginestra signatures are present. Today the tannins are pretty imposing in the positive sense, as they are present, but also impeccably balanced within the wine’s frame. This is impressive stuff. The substantial, balsamic-infused Ginestra finish is captivating.
96/100 – Antonio Galloni

Barolo Riserva Runcot 2016
30 cases (1×3) OC available @ $990 per case (w/ GST $1,079.10)
** Must be purchased with other wines from this offer & Limited to one case per customer **
Big, heady, rich and toasty.  The enormous density and richness of fruit is sufficient to sustain the framework of oak.  Mint and spice comes through with more time and air.  Beautifully polished and chiselled web of tannins.  Somehow manages to be light on its feet.  Finishes with spice and fragrance.
96/100 – Matthew Hemming MW

The 2016 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is quite possibly the single greatest wine I have tasted in more than twenty years I have been coming here, with the possible exception of the 1989s and 1990s. Deep and powerful, but not at all heavy, the 2016 dazzles from the very first taste. Dark cherry/plum fruit, menthol, lavender, licorice and mocha saturate the palate in a Barolo of extraordinary richness and intensity. The 2016 spent four years in 100% new oak, and yet there is no trace at all of wood. Magnificent!
