We are delighted to present a very rare wine from the Vauthier Family (Chateau Ausone): Chateau Haut-Simard 2016.
Château Haut-Simard focuses on cultivating a small number of hectares dedicated to Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes. Despite its unassuming appearance, this château consistently produces harmonious and delectable wines, truly representing a hidden treasure within the prestigious Saint-Emilion appellation.
During the en primeur week, our Master of Wine, Matthew Hemming, had the pleasure of revisiting the 2016 vintage of Chateau Haut Simard. His verdict? “Superb nose – compact, savory, and intense. A delicate touch of oak harmoniously complements the fruit. This vintage possesses a brisk, compact, and complete character, surpassing the achievements of the 2015 vintage. It exudes great energy and an enticing scent on the finish.”
Other critics have also lavished praise upon the 2016 vintage, with statements such as “This is the finest Haut-Simard I have tasted. Excellent.”
Matthew has recently received a remarkable offer directly from Bordeaux, ensuring impeccable provenance for these cases! “The 2016 Haut-Simard has a top-notch bouquet of gorgeous, well-defined blackberry, briar and raspberry aromas that burst from the glass. There is a floral aspect to this Saint-Émilion that the 2016 Simard does not possess. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine density and concentration and a very fine line of acidity. The oak (30% new) is seamlessly integrated, with a long tail on the finish. This is the finest Haut-Simard I have tasted. Excellent.”

“The 2016 Haut-Simard is a blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc and has a deep garnet-purple color. It rolls out of the glass with ready-to-go notes of plum preserves, blueberry compote, and dark chocolate-covered cherries, plus wafts of graphite, bay leaves, and forest floor. The medium to full-bodied palate is taut with tightly wound black fruit and earthy layers, supported by firm, grainy tannins, finishing long and lifted.”
93 Points Lisa Perrotti-Brown
“The reductive twist holds red and purple fruit, in fresh and slightly exotic mode, with a plum-compote edge. The palate delivers a linear shape with good persistence and focus on the finish. A blend of 65 per cent merlot and 35 per cent cabernet franc. Try from 2022.”
