Vinous has just published Antonio Galloni’s latest report on Barbaresco. Once again, the modest estate of La Ca’Nova has been singled out for extraordinary praise and some of the very highest ratings.
Barbaresco Montestefano 2021 from La Ca’Nova got the joint highest score of the entire article – 98/100 – sharing top honours with wines from none other than Gaja and Roagna. Needless to say, those latter bottles cost multiples of the La Ca’Nova price.
Before progressing to our 2021 allocation, we are taking this opportunity to highlight the equally brilliant 2020s from this humble estate that is increasingly going toe-to-toe with the region’s biggest names – and often coming out on top.
The 2020s are beautifully balanced…there were no periods of excessive or prolonged heat, which likely explains why the wines are so harmonious, even in the early going…It is a vintage of extreme pleasure without excess or opulence
– Antonio Galloni
We have been following and visiting La Ca’Nova since the brilliant 2016s burst onto our radar and every time a cork is pulled we pinch ourselves at the value. In a wine world of spiralling prices it is an increasingly rare treat to find wines that deliver such authenticity, purity and class. Even more so in Piemonte, one of Europe’s most celebrated classic regions.
Marco Rocca produces two tiers of Barbaresco at La Ca’Nova:
Our advice, and forgive us for bellowing this from the rooftops, is to jump on some La Ca’Nova whilst the wines remain easily available and whilst prices remain so attractive. At the highest end – and that is where these wines are to be found – 2020 is a brilliant vintage that no one is going to regret having in the cellar. To sweeten the deal, when it comes to allocating the exceptional and sought-after 2021s, supporters of the 2020 vintage are inevitably going to be at the front of the queue.

The 2020 Barbaresco has developed beautifully over the last year. It marries lovely fruit purity with classic structure. A pretty appealing combination in my book. Readers looking for an affordable Barbaresco to drink now should jump all over the 2020. It’s a gorgeous wine in every way.
93/100 – Antonio Galloni
Barbaresco Montestefano 2020
9 cases (1×6) OC available @ $360 per case (inc GST $388.8)
The 2020 Barbaresco Montestefano is incredibly shut down today, which I take as a huge positive for a year that yielded relatively open wines. Readers should be in no rush. The 2020 offers plenty of Montestefano earthiness and savoriness, with plenty of fruit that today is enrobed by formidable tannins. The 2020 is still coming together, but it has a ton to offer.
95/100 – Antonio Galloni
Barbaresco Montefico Bric Mentina 2020
25 cases (1×6) OC available @ $360 per case (inc GST $388.8)
The 2020 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina is laced with hints of white pepper, kirsch, mint, orange peel and chalk. It offers plenty of Montefico signatures, but with an extra kick of mid-palate pliancy that adds allure as well as immediacy. Best of all, the 2020 will be ready to go in just a few years’ time. The 2020 is showing so well today. It’s a dynamite wine.
96/100 – Antonio Galloni
