Thibault Liger-Belair 2020s - our first releases

A glorious Moulin-a-Vent

Unique, old vine, skin-contact Aligote rated outstanding by Allen Meadows & 5-stars by Jasper Morris MW

Bright and zesty Bourgogne Blanc for drinking now

We have selected three wines to feature in our first offer of the 2020 vintage from our dear friend Thibault Liger-Belair.  The 2020s have recently arrived in Singapore and each of these wines is in our warehouse, ready and raring to go for immediate delivery.  In addition, to launch this new vintage from Thibault, we have chosen wines that demonstrate the breadth of his production and are also ready to drink on release, so you can enjoy them right away.

Thibault has, however, minimised the extraction and maintained the energy in the wines, showing the wisdom he’s gained in almost 20 years of experience at the wheel of his family estate

2020 is a very exciting vintage in Burgundy, potentially more classic and terroir-driven than either 2018 or ’19.  These wines provide an excellent window into the style of 2020, whilst your grander bottles are left to rest in the cellar.  They also give a sneak preview of how Thibault Liger-Belair has interpreted the vintage, prior to our main offer of his full range.

  • Anyone who has met Thibault will know how passionate he is about the terroirs of Moulin-a-Vent.  The Vielles Vignes is particularly impressive in 2020 and I rated it 91-93pts from barrel.
  • Clos des Perrieres la Combe is an Aligote like no other!  From vines planted in 1978 and grapes macerated on their skins – for texture – before being fermented in old oak, it is complex and intriguing.
  • From a limestone terroir in the Macon, Les Charmes is a white Burgundy of pure, uncomplicated pleasure.  Crisp, refreshing and balanced.

Thibault’s wines embody so much of what I consider to be the true essence of Burgundy.  They are unpretentious, clearly born of the land and marked by their origins, and they are best enjoyed with warm company and laughter.

We hope you will find room for a few cases of our first offerings of 2020 from Thibault Liger-Belair, and enjoy an early preview of what’s to come from the grander wines in his range.

Moulin-a-Vent Vielles Vignes 2020
$300 per case (1×6) OC (inc GST $324)
Thibault used 40% whole bunch fermentation here, building aromatic complexity and further structure into the wine. The nose opens with an initial funkiness that blows off with air leaving pristine, vivid fruit.  Very polished, pure and light on its feet with a dusting of cocoa powder tannins.  Superb weight and layers.
91-93pts – Matthew Hemming MW

Bourgogne Blanc Les Charmes 2020
$270 per case (1×6) OC (inc GST $291.60)
Aged in stainless steel, the 2020 Bourgogne Blanc Les Charmes was due for fining the following week. It has a straightforward bouquet with yellow plum and light camomile aromas. The palate is very zesty on the entry, touches of praline and yellow plum towards the finish. Lively and fine.
85-87pts – Neal Martin / Vinous

South east facing on the limestone plateau above Lugny in the Mâconnais. Thibault has gone to pains to secure a source which avoids the extreme of thiols. Pretty mid lemon and lime colour. Pleasing fruit on the nose, not too extravagantly muscatty (the thiol effect). Good acidity behind the flesh and this is about to be fined which will tighten it up further.
86-87pts – Jasper Morris MW / Inside Burgundy

Bourgogne Aligote Clos des Perrieres la Combe 2020
$288 per case (1×6) OC (inc GST $311.04)
This is macerated on skins for a week, then pressed and vinified in wood (not new). It was racked in September and is now ready to bottle. Clear bright lemon colour. The bouquet is less flamboyant than some years but with a really impressive weight of wine. Wow! A wonderful concentrated mouthful. Moving well away from the standard idea of Aligoté. White fruit, infused with a limestone freshness, not so far from oyster shells in style.
89-91pts & 5-stars – Jasper Morris MW

There is plenty of citrus influence to the aromas of white orchard fruit, petrol and spice. The plump but energetic middleweight flavors exude a refreshing salinity on the lingering finish where a hint of Chablis-like iodine slowly appears.
86-89pts & Outstanding – Allen Meadows / Burghound
