2000 Bordeaux - Selection From A Superb Vintage

“The 2000 vintage is today the region’s magnum opus — the pinnacle of quality.”
– Robert Parker (2003)

A superb part of a recently-acquired cellar of Bordeaux is a selection of cases from the famous Millennial vintage. Immensely popular on release and growing in stature and desirability with each passing year, 2000 Bordeaux is always high on the wish lists of collectors.

For Robert Parker, the Millennial Bordeaux crop was a new high-point for the region. Improvement in vineyards and wineries coincided with “a high quality growing season, enjoying nearly all the conditions necessary for a great vintage”, and “showcased the remarkable progress Bordeaux has made in quality over the last three decades”.

These wines are emblematic of the quality of the vintage. Latour, Pichon Baron, Gruaud Larose from the Left Bank, and Eglise Client from the Right Bank are all high-scoring gems that will be gorgeous now and for many more years. If you’re looking to fill out your cellar with something special, this is an excellent opportunity.

Do take a look and let us know if you would like to secure any of these fantastic cases.

2000 Chateau Latour

The 2000 Latour is very deep in color. The nose is backward and demands coaxing from the glass, eventually revealing intense black fruit, cedar, graphite and very subtle Japanese nori aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with an arching structure that grips the mouth. The tannins are a little bolder than the 2001. This unfolds swirl by swirl, with hints of licorice emerging with time, and fanning out audaciously on the finish. (2021) www.vinous.com Drink 2023-2070

The best since the 1990, the 2000 Pichon-Longueville Baron is just now starting to shed some baby fat and develop additional complexity and layers. This still ruby/plum-colored beauty boasts a phenomenal nose of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, lead pencil shavings, and new saddle leather. It’s deep, full-bodied, and sexy, with incredible amounts of texture and opulence that keeps you coming back to the glass. It makes a mockery of so many Bordeaux today that are made in a so-called elegant style yet lack the fat, richness, and density to ever hit this high a level. With low acidity, beautiful purity of fruit, sweet tannins, and a great finish, it’s in the early to middle range of its drink window (I love it today) and has another two decades of sensational drinking ahead. Readers wanting to know what truly great Bordeaux tastes like should open a bottle of this! (2019) www.jebdunnuck.com

Concentrated and full of still-confident tannins at 21 years old, this really gives a sense of how slowly and carefully Gruaud Larose ages. Black pepper spice ripples through the blackberry and blackcurrant liqueur, and you feel the ripeness in the grapes. Black truffle, slate and espresso come out as it opens, as is so often the case with Gruaud Larose, along with plenty of charred cedar and a juicy finish. Now opening up, but still with the freshness and slightly austere tannins of a young wine, a brilliant combination of power and delicacy. Harvest September 21 to October 4, 35% new oak. The 2000 l’Eglise-Clinet was picked from 18 September and matured in 80% new oak. This has a magnificent bouquet with black fruit infused with bay leaf, smoke, freshly rolled tobacco and a touch of spice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite firm in the mouth with blackberry, clove, allspice and white pepper. This has always been a very complex millennial Pomerol with a very grippy, quite masculine finish and therefore decanting is advised. Denis Durantou informed that this was the only vintage neither fined nor filtered. Tasted at the l’Eglise-Clinet vertical at the château in April 2018. (2018) www.robertparker.com Drink 2020-2060
