As one of the smallest production of Grande Marque Champagnes, Pol Roger’s flagship Cuvee Winston Churchill is always rare with a bit of bottle age. This is particularly true of magnums, which are filled in much smaller quantities than regular bottles. They don’t come up often, so when we found a small parcel of the excellent 2009 vintage, we pounced on it.

Named after its most famous patron and designed to reflect the make-up of the cuvee at the time that Winston Churchill was enjoying it, Pol Roger’s flagship cuvee is a real gem. A high proportion of Pinot Noir means a full-bodied and complex style that complements Pol Roger’s elegant style perfectly.

The 2009 is a lovely example of this revered cuvee. William Kelley tasted it in 2020 and noted all the classic Winston Churchill traits, “Full-bodied, fleshy and textural, it’s deep and concentrated, with an ample core of fruit, ripe but racy acids, a pinpoint mousse and a long, penetrating finish”. A few years from his tasting, it should now be just entering its long peak drinking window.

Pol Roger’s 2009 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill has turned out very well, offering up a demonstrative bouquet of golden apples, clear honey, hazelnuts and fresh pastry that’s still quite primary. Full-bodied, fleshy and textural, it’s deep and concentrated, with an ample core of fruit, ripe but racy acids, a pinpoint mousse and a long, penetrating finish. This is an expressive, deceptively immediate rendition of this bottling, yet despite its charm out of the gates, readers willing to wait at least five years will be rewarded with significant additional complexity.
