2022 Kongsgaard Chardonnay, "a sort of mini-Judge” (Galloni)

Kongsgaard’s Chardonnay is one of California’s great whites. Made by a genius in a non-interventionist style, these are, in the words of Robert Parker, “reds and whites that represent the essence of their varietal, vintage and vineyard. They also remain some of the most fairly priced wines for their quality on the market. We are, therefore, delighted to have a parcel of the 2022 Kongsgaard Chardonnay to offer.

2022 was a warm year for Napa, and this means a Chardonnay of considerable intensity” where Its weight and viscous intensity make it a sort of mini-Judge” for Antonio GalloniKongsgaard’s rare and elusive Judge Chardonnay is an icon, so this is huge praise. The 2022 Judge is yet to be released, but with back vintages easily commanding £500+ per bottle on the UK market, this ‘regular’ Chardonnay makes a lot of sense as an alternative buy.

This is world-class Chardonnay from a region where prices can be stratospheric, and yet the cost here is more than reasonable given the pedigree and cachet on show. If you consider yourself a shred buyer, Kongsgaard should be high on your list each and every year. Details are below. Do take a look and let us know if you would like to secure a case or two.

The 2022 Chardonnay (Napa Valley) is typically a blend of Hyde, Hudson, Arcadia and a few others. In 2022, Hudson was not in the blend. Dried lemon peel, tangerine oil, hazelnut and chamomile unfurl in the glass. The drought conditions of the year produced a wine of considerable intensity. Its weight and viscous intensity make it a sort of mini-Judge. The 2022 is very dense and phenolic. (2024) www.vinous.com Drink 2025-2037
