It’s that time of year again, Bordeaux En Primeur is just around the corner. We expect the first releases of 2023s the week after next, so it’s time to get this campaign firmly on the radar.
2023 is set to be an exciting campaign for two reasons: Firstly, there will be some excellent quality among those chateaux that got it right. Secondly, prices might be just what the market needs. Regarding quality, early noises from the critics already in Bordeaux are positive, with James Suckling on the record saying:
“The best reds show balance and freshness with deep center palates of ripe fruit and a complement of polished tannins. In many ways, I like them better than many of the highly touted 2022s”.
As always, we’re reserving judgment until we get there, but we can’t wait to get started. 2023 is the sort of vintage we love going to taste as we can not only get a feel for the wines as a whole and by appellation but also add real value in finding the wines to focus on and then seek out and buy.
Undoubtedly, there will be some fantastic wines, but to really capture the attention, they need to be compellingly priced. Rumours are that there will be eye-catching reductions. If true, then this will be a very interesting campaign indeed. One not to miss out on.
Our team are flying out this weekend, so stay tuned for our full report, top picks and hidden gems. If you’d like to know more about the campaign or en primeur in general, please just let us know.
