96/100: Numanthia 2017, "there’s real polish and length to this" (JS)

We are delighted to offer cases of the 2017 vintage of one of Spain’s most famous wines, Numanthia. Made in Toro from select parcels of ancient Tempranillo vines, this is a dense, opulent and explosive wine that represents magnificent value.

Bodegas Numanthia is one of the wineries credited with driving the Spanish fine wine revolution, using international techniques on superb indigenous grapes and low yields to craft remarkable wines. Bold and expansive, the wines made here have achieved impressive scores and accolades over the years.

The 2017 is an excellent example, a meticulously crafted blend of over 100 parcels of vines that warrants an impressive 96 points from James Suckling. Considering the pedigree and quality, the price is as impressive as the wine.

I love the aromas of bark, mushrooms and wet earth with dark fruit. Turns to ink and black olives. Full-bodied with chewy and intense tannins, yet there’s real polish and length to this. Still tight, but starting to come through. Blend of 100 parcels of old vines with an average age of 50 years, some as old as 120 years. Drinkable now, but better in 2025.
