96 Point Rioja With 15 Years Of Maturity In Magnums

We have just found a very well-priced parcel of mature 96-point Rioja in magnums. The single-vineyard 2007 Contino Rioja Vina Olivo is a superb wine, and at over fifteen years of age, it will now be drinking superbly as all of the ageing has been done for you.

Contino’s Vina del Olivo is one of Rioja’s benchmark wines. The first single estate in the region, all the fruit here comes from the 63 hectares surrounding the winery, and the sense of place and terroir specificity this gives has earned it a cult following. It is at its best with a good amount of bottle age, making this 2007 a compelling proposition.

The critics were impressed with James Suckling, It goes on for minutes and plays wonderfully off the ripeness and firmness”and Decanter supple and rich, with typical elegant oak and spice”both awarding it 96 points.

Details are below:

2007 Contino, Rioja Vina Olivo
cs mags (3*150cl OC) @ £250 per case in bond
96 points James Suckling
Sweet strawberries and cherries with radiant flowers on the nose. Really perfumed. Full-bodied with a deep, plush core of fruit in the center palate and loads of ripe tannins. It goes on for minutes and plays wonderfully off the ripeness and firmness. Drink or hold. (2020) www.jamessuckling.com

96 points Decanter (Sarah-Jane Evans MW)
The first Rioja winery to make a single-vineyard wine, it is set in a bend in the river Ebro, with an ancient olive tree, hence the cuvée name. It is 88% Tempranillo and 12% Graciano (of which Contino has a fine old collection), aged 36 months in French, US and Hungarian oak. Superb aromas of redcurrant, vanilla, cassis; supple and rich, with typical elegant oak and spice. www.decanter.com
