98/100: 2010 Château Figeac - "just beginning to show what it is capable of" (NM)

The 2010 Château Figeac is a blockbuster St Emilion from a great Bordeaux vintage. A magnificent 98-pointer from this ever-popular property, it is now just on the cusp of a long and potentially spectacular drinking window. We are delighted to have a parcel of original cases to offer.

Figeac is a fascinating St Emilion. Its gravelly soils are well suited to Cabernet, so the blend of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot is unusual on the Right Bank. This blend gives a wine of power, structure and class. It also demands a few years in bottle to show at its best, making this 2010 particularly compelling.

Recent notes from the critics are excellent. Neal Martin tasted it in 2021, gave it 98 points and called it beautifully balanced with a fine bead of acidity, gorgeous pure fruit”noting that this is just beginning to show what it is capable ofLisa Perrotti-Brown calls it “gorgeous” and rich, and plush in the mouth” with “layer upon layer of savory-sweet flavors”

Parcels of 2010 Figeac are rare, so when we found these cases we pounced in them. Do let us know if you would like any.

The 2010 Figeac has a deep hue. The nose is quite introverted at first, with dark berry fruit, incense, touches of fig and mulberry. The palate is beautifully balanced with a fine bead of acidity, gorgeous pure fruit, mulberry and dark plum, gentle considering the vintage. This 2010 has softened in the last couple of years, gaining depth towards the finish. Very persistent – this is just beginning to show what it is capable of. Tasted at the vertical in Berlin. (2021) www.vinous.com Drink 2023-2050

A blend of 35% Cabernet Franc, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 30% Merlot, the 2010 Figeac is deep garnet colored with a touch of brick. It needs a bit of coaxing to reveal notes of baked black cherries, cassis, and redcurrant jelly, with fragrant wafts of clove oil, Chinese five spice, unsmoked cigars, and dried lavender. Medium to full-bodied, rich, and plush in the mouth, it has layer upon layer of savory-sweet flavors and just enough freshness, leading to a long and fragrant finish on this gorgeous wine.
