98/100 - A Super-Value Blue Chip Bordeaux With 2+ Decades of Maturity Sales admin

*A 98-point 2nd Growth Bordeaux from a vintage that we absolutely adore*

*Stunning value given the score and decades of ex-cellar storage*

*Pristine and perfect ex-cellar stock*

The 2001 from Gruaud Larose is a gem of a wine from a gorgeous vintage that we absolutely love. Recently rated at a stellar 98 points and now right in its long prime drinking window, it’s a 2nd Growth St Julien that will bring enormous pleasure to those who have it in the cellar.  We are, therefore, delighted to have a number of cases to offer directly from the cellars of the Chateau.

2001 is a true Bordeaux connoisseur’s vintage. Somewhat overshadowed by the Millennial vintage that preceded it, 2001 has stayed under-the-radar but is well worth seeking out. The best wines are fantastic; charming, sophisticated and beautifully layered and, even better, remain very well priced.

Gruaud Larose’s is a superb example on both counts. For Jane Anson, who lasts sampled it in November last year, this 98 pointer “plays with nuanced light-and-shade in a way that the 2000 does not at this point” and “reflects the heights that this vintage is reaching right now”High praise indeed.

Details are below:

2001 Gruaud Larose (ex cellar 2023)

£615 per case (6*75cl) in bond

98 points Jane Anson

There is a subtlety to this that strikes you immediately – gentle smoke, cold ash, tobacco, white truffle, brambled blackberry fruits, mint leaf, totally sublime, my favourite of the line up so far. It plays to the strengths of St Julien, and plays with nuanced light-and-shade in a way that the 2000 does not at this point. This is a high score for Gruaud Larose, and reflects the heights that this vintage is reaching right now – tracking how long it stays at this level is part of the beauty of wine. I tasted two versions, one decanted and one not – the smokey side is more evident in the carafe, but I preferred allowing it to open more slowly in the glass. Harvest September 21 to October 4, 35% new oak. (2021) www.janeanson.com Drink 2021-2044
