New Release From Bollinger, The 97-Point PN VZ19
A fantastic new release to offer today from the iconic house of Bollinger. A non-vintage based around 2019 – a tremendously exciting year – the 100% Bollinger Pinot Noir PN VZ19 is a gem from a Champagne producer noted for the exceptional quality of its Pinot.
The PN VZ19 is notable in taking the majority of its fruit from the Grand Cru vineyards of Vereznay harvested in 2019. Here, the chalky soils mean a Champagne of elegance, tension and intensity, with magnificent ageing potential. Combine this with the expertise of Bollinger with Pinot Noir, and the quality of the 2019 vintage – a year already generating huge hype – and the result is a seriously tempting cuvee.
Champagne expert Tyson Steltzer has tasted this new release already and was hugely impressed. For him, not only does 2019 rank “among the best of Champagne’s recent vintages” but Bollinger took full advantage to craft a cuvee that provides “a magnificent juxtaposition between the rumbling, billowing depths of ripe pinot noir like only Bollinger can conjure… and the pristine definition and lifted freshness of vibrant fruit that characterises Verzenay”. He gives it an excellent 97 points.

PN returns to its Verzenay origins (as per its first iterations as VZ15 and VZ16, followed by TX17 and AYC18). 2019 ranks among the best of Champagne’s recent vintages and the cool, north-eastern slopes of Verzenay uphold compelling tension in the midst of a warming climate. The result is a magnificent juxtaposition between the rumbling, billowing depths of ripe pinot noir like only Bollinger can conjure, thanks to the presence and magnitude of primarily Aÿ and also Avenay-val-d’Or, Tauxières, and Mutigny, and the pristine definition and lifted freshness of vibrant fruit that characterises Verzenay. Boasting a medium straw hue, it wells up with deep black and red cherry fruit, satsuma plum, blackberries and layers of anise and sarsaparilla. Barrel fermentation and a record 25 percent of reserve magnums lend their characteristic creaminess and subtle patisserie complexity, but it is the fine chalk minerality of Verzenay chalk that remains the hero of a long finish, upholding magnificent texture, tension and crystalline brightness like no other pinot village.
