Lovely Mature Pomerol Selection

The home of the cult collectable Bordeaux, Pomerol’s relatively small-scale production and world-class quality combine to mean wines that are among the market’s most sought-after, especially with some much-needed maturity. We have some fantastic examples in our cellars and are delighted to present a round-up spanning the vintages of 1990 to 2005.

From the 1990s we have some tremendous wines. Recently tasted by Neal Martin, the 1990 Latour A Pomerol epitomizes everything one could wish for in a mature Pomerol, but without paying a king’s ransom”We have a rare case of magnums available. Also listed are cases of the 1995 La Fleur de Gay, 1996 Lafleur and 1998 Chateau Clinet.

Moving on to the 2000s, we have a trio of spectacular Pomerols. 2000 Conseillante is a fabulous wine from the famous Millennial vintage and is Full-bodied yet ethereal in the sense that it seems to combine power along with eloquence and delicacy” for Robert Parker. Also from 2000 is a “Delightful” (NM) La Fleur Petrus. Making up the list is a case of the 99-point Chateau Eglise Clinet 2005outrageously beautiful” for Antonio Galloni.

Do take a look and let us know if you would like to secure any of these cases.

1995 Chateau La Fleur de Gay
£1,050 per case (12*75cl OWC) in bond – 2 cases available

Harvested from 20th September, the 1995 La Fleur de Gay has a ripe, inviting bouquet of redcurrant, freshly tilled earth, Moroccan leather and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and good acidity. It is still quite backward and deserves further decanting that afforded here. Good depth of fruit, strict tannins, hints of roasted herbs towards the savoury finish that you might think contained a little Cabernet Franc (it does not.) I would like more persistency. Leave this alone for 7 to 10 years. Tasted June 2011. www.robertparker.com

1996 Chateau Lafleur
£2,400 per case (6*75cl OWC) in bond – 1 case available

The 1996 Lafleur is not a vintage that I have seen much, although the bottom line is that in this tricky Right Bank season it is better than the disappointing Petrus. Raspberry, black truffle and leather on the rather lean nose, the palate stocky and burly if missing the refinement and precision of a great vintage. There is a sense of attractiveness to this Lafleur, but it does lack that crucial ingredient – charm. (2018) www.vinous.com Drink 2018-2026

1998 Chateau Clinet
£1,540 per case (12*75cl OWC) in bond – 1 case available

The 1998 Clinet, which was bottled by Ronan’s father just after acquiring the property, has a deep garnet core with a tawny rim. Now at 20-years old it has a well-defined bouquet with brambly red fruit, briary and pressed flowers, perhaps without the presence of fruit that I was expecting. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy black fruit opening, quite assertive on the entry with a sweet core of fruit. It just cuts away a little quickly compared to more recent vintages. Tasted at the château. (2018) www.vinous.com Drink 2018-2024

2000 Chateau Conseillante
£2,750 per case (12*75cl OWC) in bond – 1 case available
£1,375 per case (6*75cl OWC) in bond – 1 case available

La Conseillante made an excellent wine in 2001, another great one in 2005, and the estate hit home runs in both 2008 and, above all, in 2009. In fact, the latter vintage may well end up being the modern-day reference point for La Conseillante. Nevertheless, there’s a lot to be said for this 2000. An elegant, gentle style that is never a blockbuster, the 2000 La Conseillante has a deep ruby/plum/purple color and an unbelievably expressive nose of sweet kirsch liqueur intermixed with raspberries, incense, toast, and licorice. Full-bodied yet ethereal in the sense that it seems to combine power along with eloquence and delicacy, this is a beautifully pure wine that has just hit its plateau of full maturity, although ideally I think it would benefit strongly from another 4-5 years of bottle age and drink well for two to three decades. 2000 Chateau La Fleur Petrus
£2,500 per case (12*75cl OWC) in bond – 1 case available

The 2000 La Fleur-Pétrus is a vintage I have not tasted for a while. This has an intense, enveloping bouquet that wraps its arms around your senses and gives it a gentle cuddle. Minty black fruit, wilted violets and sage emerge with time. The palate is well-defined and structured, displaying a bit more backbone than I recollect on previous bottles. Cedar and graphite impart a nuanced Médocian tang on the finish. Delightful. Probably reaching its peak in the next four to five years. (2022) www.vinous.com Drink 2022-2035

2005 Chateau L’Eglise Clinet
£3,495 per case (12*75cl OWC) in bond 1 case available
99 points Antonio Galloni
The 2005 L’Eglise-Clinet soars out of the glass with captivating aromatics. Inky dark fruit, graphite, lavender, licorice, rose petal and spice captive the senses. In the glass, the 2005 is outrageously beautiful, with layers of inky dark fruit that continue to open, seemingly with no end. Floral notes and redder tonalities of fruit develop with time in the glass. L’Eglise-Clinet is another wine in this tasting that just got better and better with time. It is an epic Pomerol that evokes so many memories of tasting at the château with late proprietor Denis Durantou. Well-stored bottles will prove to be nearly immortal. (2021) www.vinous.com Drink 2025-2055
