2000 Bordeaux: Gorgeous Selection From An Icon vintage

We are thrilled to offer a stunning selection of blue-chip Bordeaux from the famous 2000 vintage. Containing only top chateaux – Conseillante, La Mission Haut Brion, Las Cases, Lynch Bages, Palmer and Pichon Baron – these are some of the most exciting wines from a benchmark year.

“The 2000 vintage is today the region’s magnum opus — the pinnacle of quality.”
– Robert Parker (2003)

For Robert Parker, the Millennial Bordeaux crop was a new high-point for the region. Improvement in vineyards and wineries coincided with “a high quality growing season, enjoying nearly all the conditions necessary for a great vintage”, and “showcased the remarkable progress Bordeaux has made in quality over the last three decades”.

These are some of the most desirable wines made in 2000 and, at well over twenty years of age, they are now just on the verge of their long drinking windows. Do take a look and let us know if you would like to secure any of these fantastic Millennial reds:

La Conseillante made an excellent wine in 2001, another great one in 2005, and the estate hit home runs in both 2008 and, above all, in 2009. In fact, the latter vintage may well end up being the modern-day reference point for La Conseillante. Nevertheless, there’s a lot to be said for this 2000. An elegant, gentle style that is never a blockbuster, the 2000 La Conseillante has a deep ruby/plum/purple color and an unbelievably expressive nose of sweet kirsch liqueur intermixed with raspberries, incense, toast, and licorice. Full-bodied yet ethereal in the sense that it seems to combine power along with eloquence and delicacy, this is a beautifully pure wine that has just hit its plateau of full maturity, although ideally I think it would benefit strongly from another 4-5 years of bottle age and drink well for two to three decades. 2000 Chateau La Mission Haut Brion
£5,250 per case (12*75cl OWC) in bond – 1 case available

One of the wines of the vintage, the 2000 has barely budged in its evolution since it was bottled and released in 2002. After ten years in bottle, it still reveals a dense opaque purple color along with a potentially sensational bouquet of blueberries, black currants, graphite, asphalt and background oak. Extremely powerful, full-bodied and superbly concentrated with good acidity and high but round tannins, this massive La Mission-Haut-Brion should take its place among this estate’s most hallowed vintages when it hits full maturity in another one to two decades. I was surprised by just how youthful this wine tasted at age 12. If tasted blind, I would have guessed it to be around 4 to 5 years old. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2050. (2012) www.robertparker.com

2000 Chateau Lynch Bages
£2,200 per case (12*75cl OWC) in bond – 1 case available

Deep ruby, softening in colour around the rim, packed with pencil lead, cigar box, slate, mint leaf, chewy tannins, great quality with an innate confidence. Has walls to scale, and a ton of life ahead, an exceptionally enjoyable 2000 vintage that remains young. 70% new oak. (2022) www.janeanson.com Drink 2022-2040

2000 Chateau Palmer
£3,550 per case (12*75cl OWC) in bond – 1 case available

Breathe deep to enjoy the curl of violet and woodsmoke aromatics that are coming out of this glass. Softened russet pink around the edges at 21 years old, still deep ruby through the core. The fruits are a little more tertiary than I expected, brambled raspberry, with hawthorn, tobacco, white pepper, truffle and campfire notes, but as it opens up, the palate expands outwards and builds in concentration and grip. No question this once-stubborn vintage is now open for business, and overall this is soft and welcoming but has decades ahead of it. Harvest September 21 to October 7. 60% new oak. (2021) www.janeanson.com Drink 2021-2038
