2014 Chambertin: Within A Whisker Of Rousseau, A Fraction Of The Price

JL Trapet’s 2014 Chambertin is a tremendous buy. From one of the Cote’s most illustrious Grand Cru vineyards and armed a decade of maturity and great reviews from the critics, it’s a superb purchase in its own right. Combine this with scores that place it very close to the mighty Rousseau at a fraction of the price and it becomes very hard to ignore.

2014 is something of an under-the-radar vintage, perhaps more famous for whites than reds. However, some epic reds were indeed made and this 2014 From Trapet must be considered among them. For Neal Martin, it is This is a Chambertin surfeit with personality and nobility”while Allen Meadows says There is excellent volume to the fleshy yet well-detailed and explicitly powerful big-bodied flavors that exhibit excellent power on the palate staining and hugely long finish.”

Their scores of 96 and 95 points respectively are interesting as they are very close to what Rousseau achieved in 2014. As the table above shows, Trapet’s 2014 provides pretty stellar quality, at a far more accessible price.
We have a lovely parcel of 14 cases to offer directly from our UK cellars. Do take a look and let us know if you would like any.

2014 JL Trapet, Chambertin Grand Cru
£1,680 per case (6*75cl OC) in bond – 14 cases available
96 points Neal Martin
Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Chambertin Grand Cru from J L Trapet showed some stem addition on the nose, although there is sufficient fruit to support and absorb it over time. Indeed, with aeration it gains more harmony and the whole bunch influence seems to recede. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a superb thread of acidity, grippy in the mouth with a tightly wound, quite firm and masculine finish and a hint of tobacco on the aftertaste. This is a Chambertin surfeit with personality and nobility. Tasted September 2017. www.robertparker.com Drink 2020-2050

This possesses an intensely floral nose with its equally cool and restrained array of rose, lavender and violet scents that add elegance to the distinctly spicy and earthy red and dark berry fruit scents that are also tinged by herbal tea nuances. There is excellent volume to the fleshy yet well-detailed and explicitly powerful big-bodied flavors that exhibit excellent power on the palate staining and hugely long finish. This intensely mineral-driven effort is most impressive but again note well that I would recommend buying this only if you have the requisite patience to cellar it accordingly as it’s absolutely going to need it. As an aside it’s going to be very interesting to see over time which wine among these three grands crus is ultimately the most interesting. (2017) www.burghound.com
