La Ca'Nova's Beautiful Barbarescos

A 4th place in Antonio Galloni’s Vinous.com’s Wines Of The Year 2024 for the 2021 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina confirms what we here at Vinum have known for a long time, La Ca’Nova of Barbaresco is a superstar winery firing on all cylinders.

We have been championing La Ca’Nova since first tasting at the winery in Piedmont several years ago and have built up on-hand stocks in Singapore of multiple top-scoring cuvees from multiple vintages, which we are thrilled to offer today.

We love them because, quite simply, these wines taste like they should be a lot, lot more expensive. We’re clearly not alone in loving them, as Galloni says in his report, “La Ca’Nova remains, surprisingly, one of the most under-the-radar estates in all of Italy… statuesque classically-built Barbarescos that offer exceptional quality, character and value.”

This selection gives a superb opportunity to secure a few bottles and see why both we, and Galloni, have found so much to love in this unassuming winery and it’s remarkable wines. As the prices and scores perfectly demonstrate, the quality-to-price ratio is sensational and these very shrewd buys.

We have these in Singapore and ready to deliver. Please let us know if you would like to add some to your collection.

2019 La Ca’Nova, Barbaresco
SGD $55 ($59.95 inc GST) per bottle (75cl) – 148 bottles available
93 points Antonio Galloni
La Ca’ Nova’s 2019 Barbaresco is stellar. Deep, layered and expansive on the palate, the 2019 is so impressive. Sweet red cherry, plum, blood orange mint and spice give this charming, effusive Barbaresco tons of complexity. The 2019 is a serious, serious wine with a lot going on. Don’t overlook it. 2019 La Ca’Nova Barbaresco, Montefico Bric Mentina
SGD $65 ($70.85 inc GST) per bottle (75cl) – 119 bottles available
96 points Antonio Galloni
The 2019 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina races out of the glass. Chalk, white pepper, crushed rose petal, cinnamon and salt abound. For readers who want to understand what Montefico is all about, well, this is it. Over the last year, the Montefico has started to flesh out a bit. Perhaps one day it will catch the Montestefano. For now, the Montefico is a Barbaresco to admire for its vibrant, mineral-drenched personality. (2022) www.vinous.com Drink 2027-2044

2019 La Ca’Nova, Barbaresco Montestefano
SGD $68 ($74.12 inc GST) per bottle (75cl) – 51 bottles available
97 points Antonio Galloni
The 2019 Barbaresco Montestefano is broad, ample and expansive, as Barbarescos from this site tend to be. Dark cherry fruit, spice, leather, incense and pipe tobacco are some of the notes that open in the glass, but more than anything, the Montestefano impresses with its textural resonance. This huge, explosive Barbaresco will benefit from cellaring, although its pedigree is evident, even in the early going. (2022) www.vinous.com Drink 2027-2044

2020 La Ca’Nova, Barbaresco
SGD $50 ($54.50 inc GST) per bottle (75cl) – 180 bottles available
93 points Antonio Galloni
The 2020 Barbaresco has developed beautifully over the last year. It marries lovely fruit purity with classic structure. A pretty appealing combination in my book. Readers looking for an affordable Barbaresco to drink now should jump all over the 2020. It’s a gorgeous wine in every way. (2023) www.vinous.com Drink 2025-2035

2020 La Ca’Nova Barbaresco, Montefico Bric Mentina
SGD $60 ($65.40 inc GST) per bottle (75cl) – 72 bottles available
96 points Antonio Galloni
The 2020 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina is laced with hints of white pepper, kirsch, mint, orange peel and chalk. It offers plenty of Montefico signatures, but with an extra kick of mid-palate pliancy that adds allure as well as immediacy. Best of all, the 2020 will be ready to go in just a few years’ time. The 2020 is showing so well today. It’s a dynamite wine. (2023) www.vinous.com Drink 2027-2045

2020 La Ca’Nova, Barbaresco Montestefano
SGD $60 ($65.40 inc GST) per bottle (75cl) – 30 bottles available
95 points Antonio Galloni
The 2020 Barbaresco Montestefano is incredibly shut down today, which I take as a huge positive for a year that yielded relatively open wines. Readers should be in no rush. The 2020 offers plenty of Montestefano earthiness and savoriness, with plenty of fruit that today is enrobed by formidable tannins. The 2020 is still coming together, but it has a ton to offer. 2021 La Ca’Nova, Barbaresco
SGD $55 ($59.95 inc GST) per bottle (75cl) – 200 bottles available
94 points Antonio Galloni
The 2021 Barbaresco is impressive. Intensely aromatic and explosive, the straight Barbaresco shows why 2021 is such a pedigreed vintage. Spice, lavender, sage and mint meld into a core of blue/purplish fruit. A gorgeous, overachieving wine, the 2021 just needs time in bottle. (2024) www.vinous.com Drink 2025-2036

2021 La Ca’Nova Barbaresco, Montefico Bric Mentina
SGD $65 ($70.85 inc GST) per bottle (75cl) – 100 bottles available
97 points Antonio Galloni
The 2021 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina is redolent of dried herbs, mint, spice, pipe tobacco and cedar. Exotic and beguiling, especially in its bouquet, the 2021 is just starting to open. I would prefer to cellar it for a few years, though. Readers will find a mid-weight, nuanced Barbaresco loaded with complexity and dynamic energy. The sculpted, youthfully austere style is classic Montefico. (2024) www.vinous.com Drink 2027-2041
