Galloni's #4 Wine Of The Year - Under £30 A Bottle In bond!
Antonio Galloni’s Vinous has just announced its top 100 wines of the year. In at number four is a brilliant wine from one of our favourite producers, Barbaresco’s La Ca’Nova. The 97-point 2021 Barbaresco Montefico Bric Mentina is a gem of a wine and, under £30 a bottle in bond, has a price tag that is almost too good to be true.
We’ve been following this producer since first tasting at the estate a few years ago when we were blown away buy the quality. Quite simply, these wines taste like they should be a lot, lot more expensive. We’re clearly not alone in loving them, as Galloni says in his report, “La Ca’Nova remains, surprisingly, one of the most under-the-radar estates in all of Italy… statuesque classically-built Barbarescos that offer exceptional quality, character and value.”
The 2021 Montefico Bric Mentina is a 97-point superstar, “Exotic and beguiling, especially in its bouquet” that makes a mockery of its price tag. I have ten cases available, as well as twenty of the 96-point 2020 vintage, a wine that demonstrates the incredible consistency here.

The 2021 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina is redolent of dried herbs, mint, spice, pipe tobacco and cedar. Exotic and beguiling, especially in its bouquet, the 2021 is just starting to open. I would prefer to cellar it for a few years, though. Readers will find a mid-weight, nuanced Barbaresco loaded with complexity and dynamic energy. The 2020 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina is laced with hints of white pepper, kirsch, mint, orange peel and chalk. It offers plenty of Montefico signatures, but with an extra kick of mid-palate pliancy that adds allure as well as immediacy. Best of all, the 2020 will be ready to go in just a few years’ time.
