Burgundy Insider's Domaine - Tiny Production 2022 Montrachet and Corton Charlemagne

This is a little-known Burgundy estate where the tiny quantities produced, coupled with excellent prices, mean the wines have a small group of aficionado devotees.

Having been regisseur at the Hospices de Beaune since 1978, Andre Porcheret was the man chosen by Lalou Bize-Leroy to help her set up her own Domaine Leroy when she purchased vineyards in 1988. Andre’s visionary approach to organic and biodynamic viticulture, following his pioneering work in the preceding decade, laid the foundation for Domaine Leroy to become the icon that it is today. It was in 1989, at the same time that Andre was working with Leroy, that he purchased a share in Domaine Monthelie-Douhairet, adding his name and taking charge of the viticulture and winemaking.

Andre preferred to stay out of the limelight – a trait inherited by his granddaughter Cataldina (who now runs the Domaine) – therefore the wines are very rarely tasted or rated by the press. This means that the name is little known, even among die-hard Burgundy fans, and therefore offer excellent value. From two the world’s finest chardonnay terroirs, these come highly recommended.

As has now been well documented, the 2022 white Burgundies are phenomenally good – it is a vintage to fill the cellar with, per the comments from Allen Meadows below:

  • “The 2022 white burgundy vintage can be summed up concisely and thusly: 2022 is the best white Burgundy vintage since 2017 and rivals, if not surpasses, 2014 in quality. Genuinely great wines were made up and down the classification hierarchy and in every commune.” Allen Meadows
  • “I believe that once you taste a few of the 2022s, you will see how good they are. It’s a vintage to buy and in quantity as the wines should drink reasonably well young but amply reward mid-term keeping, and in some cases, even longer-term cellaring.” Allen Meadows
