ERRATUM: Burgundy 2023: Domaine Jean Chartron

Jean-Michel Chartron has become one of Vinum’s closest friends in Burgundy.  He was with us in Singapore at the end of last year, hosting a number of sold-out events, and has even welcomed Vinum customers to his domaine in Puligny.  His was one of the most thrilling line-ups of white 2023s we tasted during our time in Burgundy last year and we’re delighted to release our Chartron en primeur offer today.

Jean-Michel gave me my first early glimpse of the 2023 vintage last September, when I popped in to see him during the Burgfest week.  Even at that nascent stage the purity and sucrosity of the vintage were plain to see, with a distinct citrus blossom character discernible throughout the range.  During that early tasting Jean-Michel spoke about the challenges of locking freshness into this vintage, that had finished with a period of significant heat.  When we re-visited the full range in November, it was evident that he had more than met this challenge and delivered nothing short of a triumph in 2023.

From Saint Aubin to Chevalier Montrachet, these are 2023s of precision, drive and floral finesse.  They stand proud next to the best wines of 2020 and 2022 and I was particularly enthralled by a phenomenal Clos du Cailleret – this had a deep and almost viscous texture like a great Grand Cru, reminding me of the vineyard’s immediate neighbour, Montrachet itself.

Many of Chartron’s wines, which remain extremely fairly-priced, are certain to be over-subscribed and subject to allocation.  Please let us know quickly if you’re keen to secure a few cases and we will confirm orders within one week.

Warmest wishes,
Matthew Hemming MW

2023 Jean Chartron

Saint Aubin 1er Cru Murgers des Dents de Chien
SGD $600 ($654 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
One of the top 1er Crus in Saint Aubin, the Dents de Chien has a kiss of oak sweetness on the nose. Very precise and incisive acidity on the palate. Has some spice and mint characters. Nervy and taut. This is slimline, bright and tensile. Lovely length and drive.

Chassagne Montrachet
SGD $600 ($654 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
Something of a dark horse in Jean-Michel’s range. He re-planted his Chassagne 1er Cru Cailleret plot in 2017 but doesn’t yet feel the vines are mature enough to stand alone as a 1er Cru so the fruit is declassified into this village Cru. Cailleret provides about 30% of the blend here and certainly boosts the quality above village standard! The aroma gives an impression of weight and impact. Nicely fat on the palate but shot through with the acidity needed to maintain tension. Some almond tones on the mid-palate. This is a very fine, linear and precise vintage for Chartron.

Puligny Montrachet
SGD $630 ($686.70 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
A really impressive village Cru. Aromas show some of Puligny’s classic hazelnut tones but then the palate is nervy, taut and blossom-scented. Lovely citrus profile and drive. There is a mineral quality I’d not expect at the village level.
91-93pts – Matthew Hemming MW

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Pucelle
SGD $1,080 ($1,177.20 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
** Subject to allocation **
The first of Chartron’s trio of monopole clos, this is a walled enclave within Les Pucelles. Smoke, mint and mineral fragrances. Really takes off on the mid-palate. Aromatic fireworks, spice and ripe orchard fruit. Compact and coiled.
93-95pts – Matthew Hemming MW

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Cailleret
SGD $1,140 ($1,242.60 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
** Subject to allocation **
Sure, we’re not into Grand Crus yet and I accept my score maybe seen as wildly over-enthusiastic but this was one of the white wine highlights of the entire vintage to me and I stand by it! Totally different from Pucelles this year, the Clos du Cailleret has the fat and texture of a top Grand Cru but, at the same time, is mineral and glassy. Extraordinary stuff in 2023 with depth, richness and cut. Layered orchard fruit, flowers and a building drive of spice. Mineral. Wow!
95-98pts – Matthew Hemming MW

Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru
SGD $1,800 ($1,962 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
** Subject to allocation **
A much broader and fuller-bodied wine after the Clos du Cailleret, showing the classic volume and density of Corton Charlemagne. Almost tannic and structured more like a red in its profile. Notes of white stone fruit and pears, framed by chalky dry extract. Finishes with mint and white pepper.
91-94pts – Matthew Hemming MW

Batard Montrachet Grand Cru
SGD $525 ($572.25 inc GST) per bottle – maximum 6 bottles per customer
** Subject to allocation **
Right now the oak is just a little too present on the nose but the fining process will bring finesse and ‘polish’ this out. White orchard fruits dominate. Showing some of the density of Batard on both nose and palate but detail starts to come through on the back end. Greater precision and freshness, along with spice and more complexity, emerge in the glass with air.
93-95pts – Matthew Hemming MW

Chevalier Montrachet Clos des Chevaliers Grand Cru
SGD $750 ($817.50 inc GST) per bottle – maximum 3 bottles per customer
** Subject to allocation **
Really delivers the linear drive and spice of the vineyard. The fruit is fleshy and mouth-watering in its ripeness, at the yellow stone end of the spectrum, and this delivers a huge crescendo in the mid-palate. The spice really accelerates. Multi-faceted and also pixellated in its detail.
