"Yes, I Adore the 2023 Vintage" - Neal Martin On 2023 Burgundy

“Yes, I Adore the 2023 Vintage.” Neal Martin is clear on his thoughts on 2023 Burgundy in his newly published vintage report. Indeed, he was “hard pushed to think of another vintage so pleasurable from barrel—pleasure that its best growers will translate into bottle”. This is, therefore, a vintage to buy, especially with 2024 looking tiny. With this in mind, we are delighted to offer our allocation of the newly-rated 2023s from Joseph Drouhin.

Drouhin has access to some of the finest vinyards in Burgundy, with the likes of Musigny, Montrachet and Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses all part of this enviable portfolio. In 2023 the winemakers here made full use of these exquisite terroirs to craft a set of excellent wines, all of which have been highly rated by Neal Martin.
The Musigny and Montrachet are the stars of the show, but quality here runs throughout. The Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru is “Excellent”, while the Vosne Romanee Petits Monts is a superb 1er Cru. Two more notable 1er Crus as the Gevrey Chambertin Clos Prieur and Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru.

Also well worth considering is the Village Meursault. For Martin, “This is recommended” and with a drinking window starting in 2026, it will make for delicious drinking while you’re waiting for your Grand and 1er Crus to come around.

Full details of our allocation are below and we do ask that orders are balanced across the classifications to ensure fair distribution.

2023 Joseph Drouhin, Musigny Grand Cru
£4,650 per case (6*75cl OC) in bond
95-97 points Neal Martin
The 2023 Musigny Grand Cru comes from three plots, which make 0.67 hectares, which equates to six barrels (since part of the vineyard was removed). The bouquet is beautifully defined with mineral-rich red fruit, hints of forest floor and a background garrigue note. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, the weight and complexity expected from a Musigny and hints of black pepper and black tea toward the persistent finish. This is superb. 2023 Joseph Drouhin, Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche Grand Cru
£3,400 per case (6*75cl OC) in bond
94-96 points Neal Martin
The 2023 Montrachet Grand Cru is, as usual, a blend of five parcels that undergo three separate pickings. This is contained on the nose at first. It doesn’t really want to come out and play before it gradually unfurls with orange zest, pear drop and citrus fruit hints. The palate is very well balanced with great depth. It’s a little spicier with more extract than some of its peers, lingering long on the smoky finish. This will need time. (2024) www.vinous.com Drink 2030-2055

2023 Joseph Drouhin, Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru
£2,700 per case (6*75cl OC) in bond
93-95 points Neal Martin
The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is a more tightly wound Les Petit-Monts, but it unfolds with touches of dark berry fruit, cola and wilted rose petal, with more blue fruit surfacing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins. Some wood tannins are evident but will be subsumed with time. This is a Les Amoureuses that will require time, with light peppery notes toward the rounded, quite persistent finish. (2024) www.vinous.com Drink 2028-2055

2023 Joseph Drouhin, Griotte Chambertin Grand Cru
£2,650 per case (6*75cl OC) in bond
92-94 points Neal Martin
The 2023 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from two parcels on chalky soil. It has a slightly more savory nose with finely delineated hints of brown spices infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, with quite firm tannins compared to other cuvées. This is a relatively muscular Griottes, with white pepper and hints of clove on its layered and persistent, dried blood-tinged finish. Like the Les Amoureuses, this will need time. 2023 Joseph Drouhin, Vosne Romanee Petits Monts 1er Cru
£1,650 per case (6*75cl OC) in bond
93-95 points Neal Martin
The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru, owned by Véronique Drouhin herself, has a wonderful, minerally bouquet that delivers all the transparency and Pinoté you want from this propitious vineyard. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, a wonderful sense of symmetry and a precise, quite spicy/green pepper-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. This is within touching distance of the superlative 2022. (2024) www.vinous.com Drink 2027-2050

2023 Joseph Drouhin, Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru
£1,100 per case (6*75cl OC) in bond
94-96 points Neal Martin
The 2023 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru hails from vines located on the eastern side in the lieu-dit of Les Longuettes. This has a fragrant bouquet with orchard fruit, crushed chalk and white flower notes that gain intensity in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with orange rind and tangerine tones. The vibrant, spicy, lemongrass-laced finish has a seductively waxy texture. This is excellent. (2024) www.vinous.com Drink 2027-2050

2023 Joseph Drouhin, Puligny Montrachet Folatieres 1er Cru
£560 per case (6*75cl OC) in bond

2023 Joseph Drouhin, Gevrey Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru
£670 per case (6*75cl OC) in bond
91-93 points Neal Martin
The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru has a more minerally bouquet that’s a little more austere at the moment but with impressive delineation and elegance. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It doesn’t have the same level of grip as its peers, but it is very pure, graceful and silky smooth in texture. This is delicious. (2024) www.vinous.com Drink 2027-2047

2023 Joseph Drouhin, Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru
£520 per case (6*75cl OC) in bond
92-94 points Neal Martin
The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru comes from four of five different lieux-dits that are personally owned by the Drouhins. This is clean and pure on the nose. The 30% whole cluster is seamlessly integrated, with fine mineralité in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, silky smooth and beautifully balanced with fine tannins and a dash of white pepper and sous-bois toward the finish. This is a commendable follow-up to the 2022 and may even surpass it. (2024) www.vinous.com Drink 2027-2042

2023 Joseph Drouhin, Meursault
£275 per case (6*75cl OC) in bond
89-91 points Neal Martin
The 2023 Meursault Village has a lovely nose, perhaps the best of the white Village Crus from Drouhin, with lovely yellow fruit and melted butter aromas. The latter comes through on the palate with a countervailing saltiness toward the finish. This is recommended. (2024) www.vinous.com Drink 2026-2035
