98/100: The Figeac and Canon Beating 2019 Troplong Mondot, "Harmonious and penetrating" (WK)
*A great vintage this resurgent St Emilion Chateau*
*Beats Canon and Figeac at a much lower price*
The 2019 vintage of the resurgent Chateau Troplong Mondot is a great wine and a fantastic buy. With a massive 98 points from William Kelley, it beats fellow superstar St Emilions Canon and Figeac in score in the Wine Advocate and does so at a comparative price that is almost too good to be true. We are, therefore, delighted to have a pristine parcel of cases available that have never left Bordeaux.
As is made clear in Kelley’s note, there have been monumental changes at Troplong. A lighter touch in the winery means there is much greater precision, finesse and, importantly, balance in the wine, with the powerful fruit now perfectly harnessed. For Kelley, the “velvety and layered palate that’s seamless and perfumed, its enveloping core of succulent fruit framed by rich, powdery tannins and lively acids. Harmonious and penetrating”.
His 98-point score makes this one of his highest-rated St Emilions in 2019, an immense achievement given the overall quality of the vintage. It’s a score that makes the price tags all the more eye-catching, particularly in the context of some of the excellent wines it beats. As the table above shows, this betters the excellent Canon and Figeac 2019s, yet is a comparative bargain.
A brilliant wine to buy by the case and enjoy for years to come. Details are below, do take a look and let us know if you would like to add a few cases to your collection.

98 points William Kelley
Has any Bordeaux château realized a more wholesale stylistic revolution in so short a time than Troplong Mondot? Since Aymeric de Gironde arrived at the estate in late 2017, the ultra powerful “shock and awe” style of the 2000s is out, and a new refinement is in. Of course, the deep clays that define the core vineyards around the château itself are never likely to produce light or ephemeral wines, but de Gironde has astutely understood that (to develop an analogy), when driving down hill, one can ease off on the accelerator. The 2019 Troplong Mondot is a ringing endorsement of the new direction, wafting from the glass with complex aromas of wild berries, violets, coniferous forest floor, licorice, raw cocoa and subtle spices, followed by a full-bodied, velvety and layered palate that’s seamless and perfumed, its enveloping core of succulent fruit framed by rich, powdery tannins and lively acids. Harmonious and penetrating, I never thought I’d taste a wine like this from Troplong Mondot. (2022)
