Even back in 2011 Jancis Robinson (jancisrobinson.com) was picking a Stodden wine as one of her favorites in a global blind pinot noir tasting. This is still clearly relevant today as Jancis continues to sing their praise and pick them amongst her favorite pinots (jancisrobinson.com).

We had the pleasure of tasting some of the latest vintage (2021) this month and are thrilled to be able to offer a few of them today including some beautiful and well priced Grosses Gewachs.

The Stodden family has been renowned for wine making since the 16th century and they are particularly known for their high quality and age-worthy pinot noirs. 

The vineyards are situated on the Ahr valleys steep slopes and the wines are characterized by elegance and finesse with the wines portraying notes of ripe red fruits, delicate spices and subtle mineral notes accompanied by a long finish.

While the new vintage should receive ratings at the end of the year, Stodden is a consistent critic favorite, with the GGs regularly scoring in 90s for the wine advocate Stephan Reinhardt as well as James Suckling. 

With aging quality that rivals burgundian pinot noirs at a fraction of the price while still being a small production (of a similar size to Petrus’s annual production) that focuses on quality this is an unmissable opportunity for pinot noir collectors and drinkers to add to their list.

“The 2018 Ahrweiler Rosenthal Spätburgunder GG shows beautifully ripe and aromatic, well-concentrated yet fine and subtly extracted fruit on the nose with very fine toast, tobacco and laurel notes. On the palate, this is a silky-textured very elegant and refined Pinot with generous and intense fruit that is quite advanced in its ripeness but well balanced. 2021 Jean Stodden Dernauer Hardtberg Spätburgunder Grosses Gewächs

 “From 22-year-old vines on pure slate, the 2018 Dernauer Hardtberg Spätburgunder GG has a fascinating floral, herbal and slate-driven nose with rose petals and (just) ripe black and blue berries as well as blackthorn aromas. On the palate, this is a pure, fresh and silky textured, intense, very straight and persistent Pinot with fine yet still a bit brittle tannins. It’s tight but with refreshing fruit and finesse. This is a refined Pinot Noir with a great personality, tension and finesse. A gorgeous wine. Tasted in August 2020.” (robertparker.com) 92+ points Stephan Reinhard

“Medium-depth, raspberry hue with ruby rim. Cherry, violet, dusty white pepper as well as hints of chocolate and forest floor shape the fragrance. Compared with the Sonnenberg, the Hardtberg seems to have less tannin and more acidity. The fruit is juicy with inputs of sour plum and cherry. 2021 Jean Stodden Recher Spätburgunder

 “Entirely from the Herrenberg’s younger vines and lesser plots, the 2018 Recher Spätburgunder is more open and less reductive on the round and juicy nose compared to J and JS. On the palate, this is a silky textured, pure, fresh and intense, quite juicy and powerful red with fine yet slightly drying tannins. Still young yet promising. “Cool and quiet nose marked with ethereal herbs of thyme, forest floor and a touch of red fruit. Still quite closed on the palate and unwilling to give too much up at this point. But what it does reveal speaks volumes: supple and stony with a powerful minerality driving the wine forward. Ripe cherry, bitter chocolate, mint and cedar, with marked black- and pink-pepper spice.  “From unclassified vineyards and vinified for four and more years in old barriques, the 2018 Spätburgunder J opens with a pure, refined and refreshing bouquet. Incredibly tensioned after 18 months of barrel aging, this is a bright, fresh, pure, straight and defined style of Pinot Noir with remarkable tension and finesse.
