2010 Bordeaux: Stunning Selection From A Great Vintage

2010 was the second of two magnificent years for red Bordeaux. Revered from the very first tastings en primeur, these monumental wines have grown in stature and reputation as they have aged and matured. We are delighted to have a selection to offer from this benchmark crop.
Great wines were made on both banks for the Gironde, and we have some excellent examples here, many of which have perfect scores from at least one noted critic. Ausone is a glorious St Emilion, made in tiny amounts, and we have both bottles and magnums available.
From Pomerol, we have an extraordinary quartet: Clinet, Conseillante, Eglise Clinet and Vieux Chateau Certan. Both Eglise Clinet and Vieux Chateau Certan have received 100-points. Finally, from Pauillac, we have a rare 6L Imperial of the 100-point Mouton Rothschild.
2010 Chateau Ausone

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Ausone opens with notes of sweaty leather, iron ore, Marmite toast and prunes with hints of dried herbs and charcuterie plus a medicinal waft. Full-bodied, the palate has a very racy line of acidity and well-played, chewy tannins supporting the maturing fruit, finishing with an herbal lift. (2020)

2010 Chateau Clinet

This has the appeal of a confident, well-sculpted wine that knows exactly what it was setting out to do, and has achieved it. The tannic structure is still fully in play, giving a firm outline to the fruit, where the 2009 tanins are more caressing – fully in line with expectations for these two vintages. There are cloves and fennel notes as it opens, even touches of black truffle and slate, as the Left-Bank-leaning character of Clinet comes into play. So much more serious than the 2009, but with its own beautiful character and an undercurrent of fersh mint. 60% new oak. Ronan Laborde owner. (2023)

2010 Chateau La Conseillante

Texture, structure and fruit character are all punching right at the top of their game. So good, black cherry and cassis set against aniseed, fennel, liqourice, black truffle and cocoa bean. Even at 11 years old I would suggest giving it another few years to further soften and let those violet and peony notes that curl out of the glass after 30 minutes come to the fore. 85% new barrels, 15% one year old barrels, 39hl/h yield. So different in expression from the 2009 that it’s a brilliant lesson in finding pleasure in whatever vintage is in front of you in great Bordeaux, and how they bring out different expressions of a single vineyard. 2010 Chateau l’Eglise Clinet

Deep garnet colored, the 2010 L’Eglise Clinet begins unassumingly with gentle notions of fragrant dried flowers and wild sage leading to savory nut and meat characters over an expanding core of preserved plums, blueberry compote and black cherry coulis plus a waft of menthol. Full-bodied, concentrated and wonderfully decadent, the palate is absolutely packed with rich, ripe black fruit preserves and loads of spicy sparks, framed by super ripe, super plush tannins, finishing very long and decadent. I love the interplay of subtly and power here – this is truly a WOW wine!(2020)

2010 Chateau Mouton Rothschild

A wine of noble bearing and exceptional beauty, the 2010 Mouton Rothschild is a flat-out stunner. The aromatics alone are beguiling. On the palate, the wine is every bit as thrilling, with myriad layers of flavor that continue to open up in the glass. Graphite, gravel, smoke, plum, black cherry and savory herbs are all strikingly delineated throughout. Vivid and crystalline, the 2010 is a jewel of a wine, but it is impossibly young now. Readers who can be patient will be treated to a fabulous wine. Today, the 2010 reminds me of a more civilized version of the 1986. The 2010 is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon (the highest amount of Cabernet ever here). Dollops of Merlot round out the blend. Harvest took place between September 29 and October 13. (2016)

2010 Chateau Vieux Chateau Certan

The 2010 Vieux Château Certan is deep garnet in color, and—POW—the nose opens as a complete spice-bomb, featuring notes of fenugreek, cumin seed and cinnamon stick over a core of Black Forest cake, plum preserves and blueberry pie with hints of fragrant earth and crushed stones. Full-bodied, rich and seductive in the mouth, it is laden with layers of black and blue fruit preserves, framed by super plush tannins, finishing epically long and perfumed.
