A Trio Of Stunning 2005 Pomerols: Petrus, Eglise Clinet and Conseillante

A 2021 retrospective by Antonio Galloni confirmed 2005 to be a great Bordeaux vintage. These are sublime wines across the board that are starting to open up beautifully thanks to a decent amount of bottle age. For Galloni, “the best 2005s are epic”, so we are delighted to have three Pomerols that fit that description: Eglise Clinet, Conseillante and Petrus.
The style of the 2005 is incredibly attractive. These are rich and powerful wines that still have a classic structure that will appeal to purists. All three of these showcase that style perfectly, with the Eglise Clinet “outrageously beautiful, with layers of inky dark fruit” the Conseillante “a rich, heady Pomerol” and Petrus “dazzling. Rich, ample and explosive”.

2005 Chateau L’Eglise Clinet

The 2005 L’Eglise-Clinet soars out of the glass with captivating aromatics. Inky dark fruit, graphite, lavender, licorice, rose petal and spice captive the senses. In the glass, the 2005 is outrageously beautiful, with layers of inky dark fruit that continue to open, seemingly with no end. Floral notes and redder tonalities of fruit develop with time in the glass. L’Eglise-Clinet is another wine in this tasting that just got better and better with time. It is an epic Pomerol that evokes so many memories of tasting at the château with late proprietor Denis Durantou. Well-stored bottles will prove to be nearly immortal. (2021)

2005 Chateau Conseillante

The 2005 La Conseillante is a rich, heady Pomerol. Crème de cassis, lavender, chocolate, leather, espresso, licorice and sweet French oak infuse the 2005 with tremendous character. The 2005 is, naturally, a wine of its era. There is quite a bit of extraction and tannin, and yet the wine has aged impeccably. Time in the glass brings out energy and aromatic lift to round things out nicely. The 2005 just got better and better with time, so I suggest giving it a good bit of air. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade or so. (2021)

2005 Chateau Petrus

The 2005 Petrus is dazzling. Rich, ample and explosive, the 2005 possesses magnificent density from start to finish. An exotic mélange of cedar, blood orange, spicebox, mint and dried flowers leads into a core of deep, concentrated fruit. All the elements meld together seamlessly in a Petrus that simply has it all. Readers fortunate enough to taste it will find a statuesque, monumental Petrus that is both powerful and refined. The 2005 continued to improve as I tasted it into the second day. It is without question one of the standout wines of 2005. (2021)
