Highly-Recommended: Stunning Value Pinot Noir & Chardonnay From Santa Barbara
“The Chanin wines stand out for their understated finesse and elegance”
– Antonio Galloni
Having tasted them yesterday and been hugely impressed, we are delighted to offer our allocation of 2021s from Santa Barbara’s Chanin. Combining immense quality, impressive scores and prices that are almost too good to be true, these exquisite Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs come highly recommended.
Winemaker Gavin Chanin learned his craft at top Santa Barbara wineries including Au Bon Climat, before starting his own winery in 2007. His years in the industry meant he could access fruit from some of the best plots in the region’s best vineyards. Cool climates, old vines and a magic touch in the winery mean reds and whites that massively punch above their price points.
We’re not alone in loving these. Antonio Galloni says, “The Chanin wines stand out for their understated finesse and elegance” and has rated these 2021s very well. For him, the Bien Nacido Chardonnay is “fabulous… What a wine” and the Los Alamos has “an understated depth here that is absolutely beguiling”. Of the Pinots, he calls the Sanford & Benedict “Medium in body and yet wonderfully deep” and the Zotovich “Delicate and sensual”.

2021 Chanin, Bien Nacido Vineyard Chardonnay
£510 per case (12*75cl OC) in bond
96 points Antonio Galloni
The 2021 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard is fabulous. Creamy, rich and layered, the 2021 is exquisite. Lemon oil, white pepper, chalk and chamomile all meld together in a Chardonnay of unusual viscosity. Even with all of its intensity, the 2021 remains light on its feet. Gavin Chanin certainly made the most of this fruit. What a wine. (2023)

2021 Chanin, Los Alamos Vineyard Chardonnay
£420 per case (12*75cl OC) in bond
94 points Antonio Galloni
The 2021 Chardonnay Los Alamos Vineyard marries the aromatic lift of this site with a good deal of stony intensity and drive. There’s an understated depth here that is absolutely beguiling. The Los Alamos is usually a more ethereal wine, but the 2021 has an added kick if mid-palate richness that is compelling. Citrus peel, mint, white pepper and chalk linger on the bright, intensely saline finish. (2023)

2021 Chanin, Sanford and Benedict Pinot Noir
£660 per case (12*75cl OC) in bond
95 points Antonio Galloni
The 2021 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is beguiling. Bright, lifted and beautifully focused, Chanin’s 2021 captures all the magic of this site. Blood orange, mint and sweet spice meld into a core of bright red-toned fruit. Medium in body and yet wonderfully deep, the S&B is a total knock-out. The 50% whole clusters are not at all evident. 2021 Chanin, Zotovich Pinot Noir
£576 per case (12*75cl OC) in bond
94 points Antonio Galloni
The 2021 Pinot Noir Zotovich Vineyard is one of the most ethereal wines in the range. Kirsch, dried red cherry fruit, orange peel, cinnamon and pine give the 2021 a bright upper register of aromatics. Delicate and sensual, the Zotovich is especially fine in 2021. (2023)
