For Nothern Rhone fine wine fans, we have something very interesting to offer today: three vintages of JL Chave’s rare and elusive St Joseph Clos Florentin. A relatively new wine from this historic house, this is scarce on the market thanks to production of just 200 cases or so in a typical vintage. We have three vintages available, the 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Chave acquired this parcel of vines from their neighbours in Mauve, the Florentins, and applied its exacting standards to make sure it achieves its full potential. The result is tiny amounts of brilliant wine that seldom appears on the market. Needless to say, when we found these cases we immediately snapped them up.

The medium to full-bodied 2018 Saint Joseph Le Clos Florentin comes across as a bit tight and closed at the moment, so give it a couple of years to relax before popping a cork. There are still hints of intriguing floral notes, plus a mix of plum and raspberry fruit, and ample concentration and length on the finish, so it should be a good bet for those consumers with a bit of patience. The 2019 Saint Joseph Le Clos Florentin was entirely destemmed, so while the wine’s aromas and flavors from a hot, dry vintage skew toward cassis and black olives, the overall impression is one of elegance, finesse and polish.
