A St Aubin 1er Cru to go toe-to-toe with many from Puligny
Jean Michel Chartron’s Saint Aubin 1er Cru Murgers des Dents de Chien offers a compelling blend of quality and a degree of value rarely seen in smart white Burgundy.
Dents de Chien is one of the best sites in Saint Aubin. Sat at the top of the Cotes, above the vineyards of Puligny Montrachet, the vines’ exposition has them basking in the sunshine whilst the elevated position enjoys cooler temperatures than the lower slopes. Historically, Saint Aubin’s cooler microclimate struggled to ripen fruit consistently. In the era of global warming, the village has emerged as a true winner.
2022 is the best white Burgundy vintage since 2017 and rivals, if not surpasses, 2014 in quality. Genuinely great wines were made up and down the classification hierarchy and in every commune.

The 2022 vintage is increasingly well-regarded for its white wines. On paper, the hottest and driest vintage of the 21st century thus far should not have produced exceptional Chardonnay, yet the wines are nervy, vibrant and terroir-transparent. Burghound describes them as “highly refined with exquisite acid/fruit/body combinations that should make them a pleasure to drink at almost any point in their evolution.”
Jean-Michel Chartron has become a great friend to Vinum over the years and we are looking forward to welcoming him back to Singapore later this year. The Saint Aubin 1er Cru is a sweet spot in his range, delivering sophistication and class well in excess of its modest price point. Mugers des Dents de Chien is also a worthy candidate for the cellar and blossoms with a bit of age – a 2014 opened from my own cellar last weekend was drinking beautifully.

Shows a lovely combination of the vintage’s richness and the acidity Jean-Michel has been able to lock into his wines this year. Grilled nuts and orchard fruits, with a glassy, mineral quality to the texture. Builds complexity and sweetness on the finish.

More lime than lemon in colour, with a bright grassy and fresh fruit nose. There is clearly more intensity here yet with the vivid mineral acidity which is compelling in the best St-Aubin vineyards. Notably the most persistent finish of the three 1ers crus from St-Aubin. Drink from 2027-2032.
