Selosse and his Champagnes have taken on a near-mythical status. Selosse’s approach of selecting grapes from tiny but high-quality plots, meticulous Burgundian-style winemaking – low yields and with individual lots aged in barrels – and tiny overall production mean that what little is made tends to disappear as quickly as it appears as it enjoys a fanatical following matched by only a handful of producers from anywhere in the world.
Praise for Selosse from the critics is universally huge. For Galloni, “these remain some of the most unique and viscerally thrilling wines anywhere in the world”, while Richard Juhlin called him “my favorite grower… the most original winemaker in all of Champagne”. The 2023 Disgorgements show Selosse at its best.

The NV (2016) Extra-Brut Le Mesnil sur Oger Les Carelles is classic Selosse. This bottling continues to gain complexity with each release as the collection of vintages in the blend grows. Rich and tropical, but not at all heavy, the Carelles is gorgeous. Butter, pastry, dried flowers, chamomile and brioche are some of the many notes that flesh out. I especially admire the purity of the fruit and all the Mesnil freshness that comes alive over time. Disgorged: January 19, 2023. Dosage is 0.7 grams per liter. (2023)

The NV (2016) Extra-Brut Aÿ La Côte Faron emerges from a tiny parcel measuring just 24 acres with a southern exposure. Scents of dried pear, ginger, crushed flowers and red berry fruit all grace this very pretty and expressive Champagne. The smaller scale of the base year is evident, and yet there is plenty going on. This is a very pretty and understated expression of Pinot Noir. Disgorged: February 16, 2023. Bottled with no dosage. (2023)

The NV (2016) Extra-Brut Mareuil-sur-Aÿ Sous Le Mont is intensely aromatic, delicate and quite understated, with tons of finesse and impeccable balance. It is another of the decidedly airy wines in this year’s collection of lieux-dits. Soft-spoken and impeccable in its balance, the Sous Le Mont is sublime. Dosage is 0.5 grams per liter. (2023)
