A wealth of pristine Masseto

For its entire life Masseto has been a wine unto itself, one of very few Italian reds to become a true cult wine all over the world. A phenomenal success by any measure
– Antonio Galloni / Vinous

Today we are excited to present a fabulous offer of Masseto, the most glamorous of Italy’s Super Tuscans.  Any number of high quality Merlot wines lay claim to being ‘the Petrus of Italy’, but all apart from Masseto are mere pretenders to the crown.

From its almost accidental creation in the mid-1980s – an experimental, and never commercially-released, bottling of Merlot dell’Ornellaia 1986 gave birth to this Cru – Masseto has established its place among the 1st Growths of global fine wine.  Merlot from three superior sites on the Ornellaia estate is blended to create Masseto.  It is made in much smaller quantities, and is much rarer, than Ornellaia itself, and is prized by collectors around the world for its richness, balance and texture.

Masseto is distributed to wine merchants via the negociants of Bordeaux.  The majority of the cases in this offer are coming direct from Bordeaux and have never moved from the negociant’s cellar – in other words, this is pristine stock of perfect provenance.  These ex-Bordeaux stocks are supplemented by a handful of cases from our own cellars in Singapore, please confirm specific availability with your account manager.

60+ cases of Masseto
Selection spanning eight vintages
Reaching back 20 years to Galloni’s 100/100-rated 2004
Two further Wine Advocate 100-pointers (2016 & 2006)

Two vintages of Massetino, whose debut was as recent as 2017

Very best wishes,
Matthew Hemming MW

2020 Massetino
SGD $1,080 ($1,177.20 inc GST) per case (3*75cl OWC)
9 cases available

The Masseto 2020 Massetino (Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc) is extremely generous and rich. This wine puts it all out there in full view with a bouquet that is stitched together with ripe blackberry and black cherry preserves, black stone or pencil shaving, sweet spice, cigar, smoke and tar. This was a warm and sunny vintage, and you feel the power of those sunbeams locked within the dark, opulent and concentrated fruit on display here. This is a special treat, and the 2020 edition offers a clear identity for Massetino. This vintage comes close to out-powering the bouquet of the 2019 Masseto also hitting the market now.
95/100 – Monica Larner / The Wine Advocate

2019 Massetino
SGD $1,290 ($1,406.10 inc GST) per case (3*75cl OWC)
9 cases available

Tasted before bottling, the 2019 Massetino is shaping up beautifully. This is the third vintage made of the Merlot-based wine enhanced with a small part of Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Franc is what distinguishes this euphemistically diminutive expression of Masseto, and it is its distinctive vinous signature. The 2019 vintage is soft and pliant but also incredibly rich and layered. It offers generous black fruit with ripe cherry and blackberry. Spice, tobacco and campfire ash fill in the rear and build the aromatic profile of this wine that is already stacked tall and proud. We still need to see how the 2019 plays out in the bottle, and I am especially interested to gauge how the thick and rich fruit concentration works against the less pronounced acidity of the vintage.

The 2020 Masseto is superb. Bright and vibrant in the glass, the 2020 offers up an exciting mix of dark-toned fruit, mocha, spice, leather, tobacco, cedar and a kiss of French oak. Lively acids and Franc aromatics lend vibrancy throughout. The Franc is so evident today. This is exceptionally polished and sophisticated, albeit a touch slender relative to most years. In 2020, Masseto is more finesse than power.
98/100 – Antonio Galloni / Vinous

2019 Masseto

The 2019 Masseto is fabulous. Silky, gracious and super-refined, the 2019 is a total knock-out. So often Masseto is a powerhouse at this stage, but the 2019 is so elegant, so precise. This is the first year that includes Cabernet Franc, 10% in this case. I can’t say I am at all surprised given how much Franc has added to Massetino. Red berry fruit, mocha, cinnamon and blood orange lend freshness throughout. The 2019 has just been bottle, so it’s early. But there certainly appears to be a lot to look forward to.
98+/100 – Antonio Galloni

The 2018 Masseto is going to be an absolute thrill for readers who follow this iconic Bolgheri Merlot. Silky, mid-weight and supremely gracious, the 2018 reminds me of the 2004 in its aromatic intensity and classic, refined feel. Inky red/purplish fruit, cedar, lavender, espresso, sage and mint are some of the many aromas and flavors that develop with time in the glass. There is so much to like here. More than anything else, I am struck by how ripe and well balanced the tannins are, something that is rare for Masseto, especially in the early going, when the wine can be a bit burly.

2017 Masseto
SGD $2,850 ($3,106.50 inc GST) per case (3*75cl OWC) – 6 cases available
SGD $xx ($yy inc GST) per double magnum (1*300cl OWC1) – 1 available

The 2017 Masseto is fabulous. A wine of tremendous inner perfume and sensuality, the 2017 dazzles from start to finish. Although not the most potent or structured Masseto, the 2017 impresses with its breathtaking finesse. The flavors are vibrant and remarkably pure from start to finish. Blackberry jam, bittersweet chocolate, spice, lavender and licorice all come alive in the glass. I have a hard time thinking of a Masseto with this much sheer allure at the outset. Masseto has so often been a wine of impact, but the 2017 says it all with finesse. It spent 22 months in 100% new oak, a bit less time than is typical, and finished its aging in tank, decisions taken to preserve as much freshness as possible.
97+/100 – Antonio Galloni

2016 Masseto
SGD $4,200 ($4,578 inc GST) per case (3*75cl OWC) – 6 cases available
The 2016 Masseto is simply stunning. Fresh, vibrant and full of energy, the 2016 dazzles from start to finish. I can’t remember tasting a young Masseto with this combination of fruit density and silkiness. Just as it was from barrel, the 2016 Masseto is a wine of magnificent balance and proportion. The polish and sensuality of the tannins is simply remarkable for a young Masseto, especially compared to just a few years ago, when Masseto was often a bruiser right out of the gate. Two thousand sixteen was a year with a long summer and some drought, but no real extremes. Acidity is in line with vintages like 2006, but gentler winemaking with fewer pumpovers than in the past has given birth to a wine that is more finessed than those of the preceding decade.
98+/100 – Antonio Galloni

The 2016 Masseto is a thunderstorm of emotions, but it manages to keep them under perfect control…this vintage is a seamless wine of the highest pedigree.
100/100 – Monica Larner

2014 Masseto
SGD $2,700 ($2,943 inc GST) per case (3*75cl OWC) – 10 cases available
The 2014 Masseto continues to develop into a very pretty wine. Silky, medium in body and gracious, the 2014 is all about understatement. Each time I taste it, I uncover a new layer of dimension and nuance I did not see before. I expect the 2014 will develop along the lines of the 2005 and 2002, both wines from very cool, late-ripening years. This is the best showing yet for the 2014. This very challenging cool, rainy growing season is also the longest harvest at Masseto. Picking started on September 5 and wrapped up more than a month later, on October 7.
93+/100 – Antonio Galloni

2006 Masseto
SGD $5,200 ($5,668 inc GST) per case (3*75cl OWC) – 2 cases available
I remember the first time I tasted the 2006 Masseto. It’s that kind of wine. The 2006 is every bit as magnificent today. Dense, richly-textured and potent to its core, the 2006 is a wine for readers who can be patient. I love the brooding intensity and sense of gravitas the 2006 conveys. Tonight, it is stellar, but still so young.
99/100 – Antonio Galloni

The wine that most delighted me at this historic tasting of Tuscany’s most iconic wines was the 2006 Masseto. This is a wine of sheer power, bliss, opulence, infinity and sublime seduction. This Merlot-based masterpiece hits all your senses with the grace of a ballerina and the power of a heavyweight.
100/100 – Monica Larner

2004 Masseto
SGD $5,100 ($5,559 inc GST) per case (3*75cl OWC) – 6 cases available
The 2004 Masseto, one of my personal favorites, is positively stellar. I have always adored the 2004 for its silky tannins, stunning aromatic presence and total finesse, all of which are on display today. Beautifully pure to the long finish and profoundly beautiful in every way, the 2004 has it all. It was a textbook vintage that only presented one real challenge, and that was moderating the naturally high yields that resulted from an unblocking of energy the vines had held in store from the previous year. Where producers moderated yields, the wines are often stunning, as is very much the case here. If forced to choose only one vintage of Masseto I could own or drink it would be the 2004.
100/100 – Antonio Galloni
