2023 Chateau Ausone
We are delighted to offer the newly released 98-100 point 2023 Chateau Ausone. Easily one of Bordeaux’s finest wines in any given year, this layered, complex, ethereal and potentially perfect St Emilion is one of the highlights of the 2023 campaign with the microscopic amounts available likely to sell out on allocation.
“When you ask almost any chateau owner or vigneron to name the best terroir in Bordeaux, the overwhelming majority say it belongs to Chateau Ausone”
– Jeff Leve
As Jeff Leve mentions above, the terroir from which Ausone is made is magnificent. The unique soils of this vineyard mean a wine that is layered, complex, and powerful while always light on its feet and ethereal. It’s a wine that needs to be tasted to be believed. The 2023 is a staggeringly good example.
For Lisa Perrotti-Brown it is potentially a 100-point wine and “The medium-bodied palate has wonderful tension and is incredibly taut and tight-knit, offering glimpses at layers”. James Suckling says “The purity of fruit and fluidity is so primary, like perfectly picked grapes with their juice”.
Total output is tiny at Ausone and there is precious little to go around so please do let me know at your earliest if you would like to secure an allocation of this or the even rarer Chapelle d’Ausone:

A blend of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot, the 2023 Ausone has a pH of 3.63 and a deep garnet-purple color. It is very mute and reticent to show its personality to start, needing a lot of shaking and pleading to coax out a series of intense scents: fresh blackberries, violets, licorice, pencil shavings, and tar, leading to an undercurrent of Sichuan pepper and fertile loam. The medium-bodied palate has wonderful tension and is incredibly taut and tight-knit, offering glimpses at layers of mineral and floral accented fresh blackberry flavors. It is textured by incredibly ripe, fine-grained tannins, delivering a very long finish, laced with mineral sparkles. (2024) www.theinweindependent.com Drink 2030-2060
98-99 points James Suckling
I don’t think I have tasted an Ausone like this. The purity of fruit and fluidity is so primary, like perfectly picked grapes with their juice. Then there is citrus freshness. It’s muscular, with toned tannins that caress the palate and give a seamless finish. This really could push the boundaries for the character of Ausone, in the way of finesse with structure. Watch it. 60% cabernet franc and 40% merlot.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2023 Chapelle d’Ausone is a combination of two plots, plus some press wine. It has a deep garnet-purple color and after a little shaking the nose erupts with notes of wild strawberries, black raspberries, and wood smoke, followed by nuances of garrigue and fallen leaves, with a hint of iron ore. Medium-bodied, the palate vibrates with electric black and red berry layers, framed by fine-grained tannins and great tension, finishing long and shimmery. Impressive!
