2023 Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere

St Emilion’s Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere has been one of the superstars of the last two en primeur campaigns. The 2023 has just been released, and we are fully expecting it to meet with huge demand thanks to its eye-catching combination of quality and value.
Canon La Gaffeliere sits on a well-draining terroir that ripens early and means a wine that is powerful and muscular with rich fruit intensity balanced by fresh acidity and plush tannins. These are always accompanied by “gorgeously striking aromatics” (Jane Anson).
The 2023 is a fantastic example. Lisa Perrotti-Brown calls it tightly wound and refreshing, with firm fine-grained tannins and bright crunchy red and black berry flavors” and gives it an excellent 95-97 points. Antonio Galloni was also impressed, calling it a powerful, dense wine where the balance is compelling. James Suckling also liked it, giving this 2023 an excellent 96-97 points.
A lovely wine and great value. Details are below, do take a look and let me know if you would like any secured:

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Canon la Gaffeliere pops from the glass with exuberant notes of fresh black and red currants, kirsch, and wild blueberries followed by hints of pencil shavings, violets, and mossy tree bark. The elegantly styled, medium-bodied palate is tightly wound and refreshing, with firm fine-grained tannins and bright crunchy red and black berry flavors, finishing long and minerally. The blend is 45% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. (2024) www.thewineindependent.com

The 2023 Canon La Gaffelière is a powerful, dense wine. In recent years Canon La Gaffelière has been on the more perfumed side, but the 2023 moves in a direction of textural intensity. On the other hand, its balance is compelling. Dark red-toned fruit, pomegranate, spice, blood orange, mint and dried herbs open, but only with great reluctance. Tannins are present but also buried by the fruit. (2024) www.vinous.com Drink 2030-2048

Showing al-dente fruit with raspberries, orange peel and other hints of bitter citrus. Medium-bodied with creamy and medium, round tannins leading to a salty finish. Cabernet franc really showing through. A blend of 45% cabernet franc, 35% merlot, 20% cabernet sauvignon. May be better than 2022. (2024) www.jamessuckling.com
