2023 Chateau Cos d'Estournel
Cos d’Estournel consistently makes some of Bordeaux’s finest wines. From its famous vantage point in St Estephe overlooking the vines of neighbouring Chateau Lafite, there is a consistency here matched by only the very best. The 2023 Grand Vin has just been released and with scores of up to a potential high of 99 points, is a tempting prospect.
Cos always delivered power and complexity with rich and bold flavours to the fore. In recent years that’s been balanced by ever more purity, delicacy and finesse, with the resulting wine incredibly complete. In 2023 it continues on this path and, for James Suckling, “The finesse is pretty phenomenal here, with such complexity” and it is, “Seductive. Ever-so long and precise”. He gives it 98-99 points.
Antonio Galloni is also a fan, giving it 96-98 points and calling it “fabulous. Dark, resonant and inviting” and says “Readers will find a Cos endowed with tremendous substance and intensity”. For him, “I can’t remember a young Cos with this much fruit concentration, yet there is nothing overdone here. I loved it”.
Also available is the excellent second wine, Pagodes de Cos and white Cos d’Estoournel Blanc. Details are below, do take a look and let me know if you would like any of either secured:

The finesse is pretty phenomenal here, with such complexity of fruit and vivid, bright flowers. Lavender and rose. Seductive. Ever-so long and precise. Lead pencil and graphite. Reminiscent of old, great Cos, such as 1955 or 1982, but with so much more form and modernity. A renaissance of Cos. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 33% merlot, 1% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. www.jamessuckling.com

The 2023 Cos d’Estournel is fabulous. Dark, resonant and inviting, the 2023 has so much to offer. All the elements are beautifully woven together. Black cherry, plum, licorice, espresso, mocha and incense fill out the layers. Readers will find a Cos endowed with tremendous substance and intensity. I can’t remember a young Cos with this much fruit concentration, yet there is nothing overdone here. I loved it. (2024)

The 2023 Les Pagodes de Cos makes a strong statement out of the gate. A blast of intense dark fruit, leather, spice, menthol, game, licorice, dried herbs and chocolate infuses the palate with remarkable textural intensity. Ample and resonant in the glass, with fabulous balance, Les Pagodes is exceptionally fine in 2023. The long, sustained finish is a thing of beauty. (2024) www.vinous.com Drink 2027-2043

This shows real precision and sophistication. Tight and dense palate that is concentrated but not heavy, with intensity and minerality. Sea salt and white pepper at the end. This is really at the top level of dry white Bordeaux now. 70% sauvignon blanc and 30% semillon. (2024) www.jamessuckling.com
