2023 Chateau Pavie
Today sees the release of a Bordeaux big hitter, the potentially perfect Chateau Pavie of St Emilion. The 2023 is a great Pavie in the making and charmed Lisa Perrotti-Brown and James Suckling, both of whom give it an excellent 98-100 and 99-100 points respectively.
A powerful St Emilion from one of Bordeaux’s finest terroirs, Chateau Pavie roared back into form thanks to massive inward investment from the Perse family in the 1990s. This investment continues to pay dividends in the form of great wines, year after year and one of the most loyal followings of any wine in Bordeaux.
Fans of the estate will find a huge amount to love here. Lisa Perrotti-Brown praises the “gorgeous perfume” and “firm, ripe, rounded tannins and Pavie’s signature tension”. For her, “This is breathtaking!”. James Suckling was just as impressed in a Pavie he calls “so elegant and sophisticated already, with a really electric presence and length” and “weightless and energetic”.

The 2023 Pavie is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a few moments of swirling to unlock scents of blueberry pie, cassis, and preserved plums, eventually giving way to a gorgeous perfume of violets, star anise, cedar chest, and iron ore. The medium to full-bodied palate shimmers with bright, fresh black fruit layers, framed by firm, ripe, rounded tannins and Pavie’s signature tension, finishing very long and very fragrant. This is breathtaking! The blend is 51% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc, and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, with pH 3.66. (2024) www.thewineindependent.com Drink 2030-2060
99-100 points James Suckling
This is so elegant and sophisticated already, with a really electric presence and length that goes on and on. It’s medium- to full-bodied with an intensity of tannins. It remains weightless and energetic. The pH is 3.41, making this a vivid and lively wine. Currant, orange and stone. Sea salt, too. The limestone soils created a unique wine here in 2023. A blend of 71% merlot and 29% cabernet franc. (2024) www.jamessuckling.com
