Bouchard's Outstanding 2020 Chevalier Montrachet In Pristine Magnums

Having tasted over 250 examples early this year, our resident MW, Matthew Hemming, is clear on the outstanding quality of the 2020 white Burgundy vintage. For him, “2020 is a very special year for white Burgundy, both in terms of absolute quality and – crucially – consistency”. Just arrived in our cellars in the UK is a gem, magnums of the 2020 Bouchard Chevalier Montrachet La Cabotte Grand Cru.

Matthew tasted through these 2020s at the annual ‘Burgfest’ tasting in Burgundy. A roster of top critics and merchants were present and the consensus was clear, 2020 was a fantastic year for white Burgundy. The style is one of linear elegance, lower alcohols, tension, minerality and structure. For those who like their white Burgundy classically styled, it’s a vintage to focus on.

Bouchard’s Cabotte is a great place to start. Affectionately known as ‘Montrachet du haute pente’ – up-slope Montrachet – Bouchard’s La Cabotte is taken from vines that are actually within the original boundaries of Le Montrachet and the wine has a character distinct from that of the ‘regular’ Chevalier. William Kelley was a fan of this from barrel, both awarding it an excellent 95-97 points. More recently, Jasper Morris MW gave it 96 points from bottle.

We only have a limited number of these magnums available so please do let us know at your earliest if you would like to secure any.

A full ripe Chevalier-Montrachet, on the luxurious side with baked apples. A little bit dry on the finish as some tannins kick in. No, I have misread this. The 2020 Cabotte is not dry, but just exceptionally backward. Drink from 2028-2038. Tasted: May 2024. www.insideburgundy.com

The 2020 Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte Grand Cru is brilliant, bursting with aromas of orange oil, nutmeg, crisp orchard fruit, white flowers and peach. Full-bodied, satiny and concentrated, it’s layered and multidimensional, with striking depth and intensity, concluding with a long, resonant finish. It’s a brilliant wine in the making.
