Chateau Lafleur's Limestone Cru

Cuttings of old vine Bouchet – a unique and ancient iteration of Cabernet Franc – taken from the fabled Pomerol vineyard of Chateau Lafleur, transplanted to a limestone terroir on the hills above Fronsac, gave birth to a new Cru for the Guinaudeau family in 2018: Les Perrieres.

There are no second or third labels chez Guinaudeau.  Each wine expresses a distinct terroir and vineyard.  Using a Burgundy model, Chateau Lafleur is best thought of as the Grand Cru.  Chateau Grand Village is the family’s village wine.  Les Perrieres, and its white wine sibling Les Champs Libres, are 1er Cru.

A striking wine from the limestone plateau of Fronsac planted with massale selections from Lafleur, the 2019 Les Perrières de Lafleur is indecently good.

As Singapore ambassadors for the Guinaudeau family, we speak regularly and chat about what we have been tasting and drinking.  During a call last week, Omri told us that he has been pouring Les Perrieres 2019 as it enters a plateau of early and vibrant drinkability.  This was the ideal prompt for us to release some of our library stock, to allow more of our customers to discover the newest member of the Chateau Lafleur family.

Bouchet, bearing the DNA of Lafleur, interpreted through a lens of limestone – similar to that of Burgundy’s Cote d’Or – makes for a complex, mineral and spice-driven wine.  Almost in defiance of 2019’s ripeness and concentration, Les Perrieres is slender and floral, prioritising savoury notes and texture over fruit.  To get the best from a bottle now, give it 90 minutes in a carafe before serving.

We have a very small quantity of cases of bottles, and an even tinier quantity of magnums, for our customers in Singapore.  Do get in touch to try this new cru before it is all gone.

With best wishes,
Matthew Hemming MW

Floral, focused and intense.  Extremely violet-scented and taut.  Superb texture where the barest of silk sits over a chalky structure.  Bright berry fruit with lots of light and shade.  Crunchy and light on its feet.  Chalky, mineral finish with dusty and fragrant fruit tones.

This has earthy, graphite-laced cool blue fruits that you wouldn’t necessarily associate with a solar vintage like 2019. It says a lot for the deft, skilful winemaking, as this delivers a sense of verticality and lift through the palate, and edges of elderflower and pencil lead delicacy. Gathers in intensity, reflects its limestone soils. Demands attention and patience. From the Guinaudeau family, as with Château Lafleur in Pomerol.
95/100 – Jane Anson / Inside Bordeaux
A striking wine from the limestone plateau of Fronsac planted with massale selections from Lafleur, the 2019 Les Perrières de Lafleur is indecently good. Bursting with aromas of raspberries, violets, warm spices and rose petals, it’s full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a racy, tensile profile and a long, intensely mineral finish. Les Perrières de Lafleur is compelling testimony to the primacy of vine genetics over age, as the Cabernet Franc here is a mere 3-4 years old and the Merlot 7-8, yet the resulting wine already boasts incredible intensity and character. It certainly puts the “Supérieur” in the appellation “Bordeaux Supérieur.”
