Dr Loosen latest vintage 2021 Grosses Gewachs Offer - recently tasted and unmissable

We were thrilled to have had the opportunity to taste and offer these three wonderful wines this week: the most recent vintage of Dr Loosen Grosses Gewachs.

Loosen wines are mostly ungrafted and have been rooted in weathered slate soil for 60 to more than 100 years. The below Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG as well as the Graacher Himmelreich are steeped in the famous local blue slate while the Urziger Wurzgarten is rooted in volcanic red soil. All are cultivated on spectacularly steep slopes and yields are kept low.

The GG wines stay in large wooden barrels for 12 months after the harvest and as such the latest vintage available is not the 2022 but 2021.

The wines show impressive balance and all have a wonderful minerality while the Urziger Wurzgarten has a nice spicy undertone.

Well rated across the board and an unmissable buy for riesling lovers. Do let us know if you would like to secure any of these fantastic cases:

2021 Dr Loosen, Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Grosses Gewachs Alte Reben

(6*75cl OWC) @ £150 per case in bond

– 95 pts James Suckling

“Flint, crushed stone and cassis aromas pour from the glass of this very exciting, youthful Mosel riesling GG. As refined as it is concentrated, this glides over your palate so gracefully. Very fresh and pure, this has a fantastic minerality at the very long clean finish. From the Stablay section of this large and well-known site. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.” JamesSuckling.com

2021 Dr Loosen, Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Grosses Gewachs Alte Reben

(6*75cl OWC) @ £175 per case in bond

-94-95 pts Stephan Reinhardt

“The 2021 Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG Alte Reben shows an intense, elegant and coolish bouquet of ripe, bright fruits and flint stones. Lush and round on the palate, this is a supple, salivating, saline and juicy WSU with an intense and substantial finish. This is gorgeous and kind of hedonistic yet with the clear and defined 2021 acidity. Excellent. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted as a sample at the domaine in July 2022. To be bottled in October.” (Drinking Window 2023-2050) RobertParker.com

2021 Dr Loosen, Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Grosses Gewachs Alte Reben

(6*75cl OWC) @ £148 per case in bond

-95-96 pts Stephan Reinhardt

“The 2021 Ürziger Würzgarten GG Alte Reben offers a clear, beautifully refined and flinty bouquet of ripe and elegant Riesling fruit spiced with stony splinters. Lush and refined on the palate, this is a very elegant, saline and textured Riesling with enormous salinity in the mouth-watering, rich and intense finish. Definitely the finest GG of the vintage here. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted as a sample at the domaine in July 2022. To be bottled in October.” (Drinking Window 2023-2050) RobertParker.com
